il quale lo fece accantonare ad Altino, piccolo borgo che sorge alla destra della strada che da San Michele del Quarto va a Porte Grandi, sopra le rovine dell’antica città romana, che cominciavano appunto allora a emergere dai lavori di sterro eseguiti per la costruzione delle trincee”. Anche don Celso Costantini, sempre cappellano della Terza Armata, ricorda nel suo diario: “Ieri sono stato ad Altino. Un velo di pioggia annebbiava la solitaria campagna e acuiva il senso di tristezza che veniva dalle memorie della città morta Le memorie del fato della bella città romana d’Altino, distrutta dai barbari e dalla malaria, erano ridestate e colorite dalla presenza dei militari I soldati avevano messo allo scoperto qualche pezzo di mosaico pavimentale romano. Sulle macerie di scavo si vedeva una bella anfora con la bocca piena di terra”
