La nuova toponomastica riguarda il tratto della rotonda tra via Arno e via Duccio di Buoninsegna posto alle spalle del monumento dedicato alle Vittime Civile di Guerra
andando a rendere così un perenne omaggio alla memoria dei 1.800 uomini e donne caduti durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale tra bombardamenti, eccidi e successivi ordigni inesplosi che hanno martoriato il territorio aretino soprattutto nel periodo tra il 1943 e il 1944. L’intitolazione è stata voluta dall’ANVCG – Associazione Nazionale Vittime Civili di Guerra e ha trovato concretizzazione in seguito a un atto di indirizzo presentato nel gennaio del 2022 dal consigliere Alessandro Caneschi e approvato all’unanimità dal consiglio comunale. La collocazione del Largo Vittime Civili di Guerra è adiacente all’omonimo monumento realizzato nel 2007 dallo scultore Andrea Roggi per racconta la drammaticità del conflitto attraverso la disperata rincorsa di una donna in fuga dai bombardamenti. L’opera trovò ispirazione da un fatto realmente accaduto e testimoniato dall’ingegner Luigi Lucherini che ricordò come, durante una lezione scolastica nel dicembre 1943, un’insegnante udì il suono delle sirene antiaeree e radunò gli alunni per condurli nel rifugio in direzione del sottopassaggio di via di Pescaiola: quel tentativo, purtroppo, fu vano perché il bombardamento colpì quella zona della città, causando la morte del gruppo in fuga.
La cerimonia si è svolta questa mattina alla presenza del presidente del Consiglio Comunale Luca Stella, dell’assessore Francesca Lucherini e di Aldo Ierardi e Ulisse Domini, rispettivamente presidenti regionale e provinciale dell’ANVCG. Alla svelatura è seguita la deposizione di una corona di alloro ai piedi del monumento che ha visto la partecipazione di autorità e rappresentanti di associazioni e enti attivi sul tema della memoria. “Una intitolazione e un monumento che rendono doveroso omaggio e al contempo sollecitano la riflessione sui terribili esiti che i conflitti bellici hanno sulle comunità, oltre a rinnovare l’urgenza di perseguire e di affermare i valori della pace”, ha commentato il presidente del Consiglio Comunale Luca Stella. “Compiamo oggi un ulteriore atto simbolico che ricorda il terribile contribuito e gli enormi sacrifici che sono stati sopportati in quei dieci mesi tra la fine del ’43 e la Liberazione del luglio ’44 e che comprendono l’episodio raccontato da mio padre”, ha aggiunto l’assessore Francesca Lucherini.
“L’intitolazione di un largo alle vittime civili di guerra è per noi un motivo di particolare emozione e orgoglio, configurando il raggiungimento di un importante traguardo a cui la nostra associazione ha lavorato per molti anni. Questa strada permetterà di rendere onore ai tanti civili defunti nella nostra provincia a causa dei conflitti armati e, allo stesso tempo, rappresenterà un veicolo per tenere viva la memoria e per promuovere una cultura di pace”, ha ribadito Ulisse Domini, presidente provinciale dell’ANVCG. La scelta del 2 dicembre come data per l’intitolazione è fortemente simbolica perché ricade a ottant’anni esatti dal 2 dicembre 1943 quando Arezzo visse una delle giornate più tragiche della Seconda Guerra Mondiale con ben due bombardamenti sulla città. Gli attacchi aerei tra il novembre del 1943 e il maggio del 1944 furono in totale dieci e causarono 179 morti, 325 feriti e ingenti danni al centro storico.
