Il Natale è la festa che celebra la nascita di Gesù e che, per la chiesa cristiana, ricade il 25 dicembre. Nel corso dei secoli ci si è interrogati spesso sulle origini di questa celebrazione. Per ripercorrere gli eventi che hanno contribuito alla scelta della data in cui festeggiare il Natale dobbiamo ricorrere a un testo molto antico, il Cronografo dell’anno 354. Questo documento racconta di una festa che si celebrava a Roma proprio in occasione del 25 dicembre.
Non sappiamo molto delle origini storiche e i mezzi che abbiamo per approfondire questo argomento sono frutto di diverse ipotesi. Probabilmente la data è stata fissata al 25 dicembre poiché nel corso di questa giornata si festeggiava una ricorrenza pagana, il solstizio d’inverno che veniva chiamato “Natalis Solis Invicti”, ovvero la nascita del nuovo sole. Come accade spesso, anche in questo caso la tradizione cristiana si lega a quella popolare e contadina. Infatti, nello stesso periodo si festeggiavano tante altre ricorrenze legate al mondo rurale. Durante il solstizio, il popolo celebrava anche i Saturnali in onore di Saturno, il dio dell’agricoltura, durante i quali gli schiavi ricevevano dei doni dai loro padroni e l’invito a sedere alla stessa mensa come dei cittadini liberi. Questa tradizione si ricollega anche al consueto scambio di doni ancora oggi presente nei rituali di natalizi. Il Natale coincide dunque con due celebrazioni, da un lato il solstizio d’inverno e dall’altro le feste de Secondo il calendario liturgico il Natale è una solennità molto importante, ancor di più dell’Ascensione e della Pentecoste. La Pasqua invece è considerata la festa cristiana più importate di tutte, incluso il Natale. Nonostante questo, resta comunque la festa più sentita e attesa per i fedeli di tutto il mondo.
Quando è nato Gesù? Se il 25 dicembre è una data scelta per diverse ragioni, qual è la vera data di nascita di Gesù? Purtroppo ancora oggi questa informazione è sconosciuta. Non compare nei Vangeli e non è presente in altri scritti contemporanei. Per questo motivo i cristiani iniziarono a sviluppare tradizioni diverse e basate sui ragionamenti teologici. Nel corso del tempo infatti, la nascita di Cristo veniva collocata in momenti diversi dell’anno, anche se generalmente ricadeva sempre nel periodo invernale.
Il filosofo Clemente Alessandrino (150 – 215 d. C.) scriveva: “Non si contentano di sapere in che anno è nato il Signore, ma con curiosità troppo spinta vanno a cercarne anche il giorno” (Stromata, I,21,146). In questo testo viene messa in luce la forte curiosità per i fedeli di scoprire la vera data di nascita di Gesù. E osservando il testo più affondo, possiamo notare l’esistenza di una tradizione molto antica. Una civiltà che non ha mai smesso di trovare la risposta a questa misteriosa domanda: quando è nato Gesù? Quello che è certo è che fin dai primi secoli i fedeli collocavano questo importante evento nel periodo invernale. Secondo gli studiosi, la tradizione prende spunto dalla data in cui i seguaci di Basilide celebravano il Natale, tra il 6 e il 10 gennaio.
È solo nel Novecento che il dibattito sulla sua nascita aprì la strada a una nuova prospettiva alternativa o complementare a quella proposta dalla tradizione. Ci riferiamo all’ipotesi di istituire il Natale in sostituzione della festa pagana del Sol Invictus Nel corso dei secoli alcuni studiosi hanno cercato di trovare una risposta definitiva al quesito. In particolare, ricordiamo le ricerche di Shemarjahu Talmon, dell’Università Ebraica di Gerusalemme. Talmon si preoccupò di ricostruire le turnazioni sacerdotali degli ebrei e di applicarle al calendario gregoriano riuscendo così a confermare a tutti gli effetti la data di celebrazione del Natale. Anche la tradizione ebraica celebra una ricorrenza religiosa molto importante in corrispondenza del Santo Natale. Infatti, la festa ebraica della Rivendicazione del Tempio, la Hanukkah, cade il venticinquesimo giorno di Kislev, un mese che corrisponde indicativamente a novembre o dicembre. Questa festa ha un significato molto diverso, dura 8 giorni e non sembra aver influenzato la tradizione del Natale cristiano.
Le prime celebrazioni del Natale a Roma
La prima celebrazione del Natale a Roma risale al 336, prima di allora era una celebrazione pagana dedicata al Sole. Nel 354 papa Liberio decise di fissare la data del 25 dicembre come quella della nascita di Cristo. Da Roma la festa si diffuse a Milano intorno alla fine del IV secolo per poi raggiungere tutte le diocesi dell’Italia settentrionale. I regali di natale rappresentano ormai una consuetudine. Oggi è quasi scontato regalare qualcosa a parenti e amici in occasione del 25 dicembre, fa parte della nostra tradizione, anche se non sempre è stato così. Lo scambio dei regali appartiene infatti alla tradizione cristiana più moderna e si ricollega ai doni che Gesù Bambino ricevette in occasione della sua nascita: oro, incenso e mirra. Verso la fine del Medioevo gli adulti iniziarono a donare i primi regali ai bambini per fargli ricordare la nascita di Gesù come un momento di grande gioia. Lo scambio dei regali ha quindi un sottile legame con la religione, anche se nei secoli ha iniziato a rivestire un ruolo sempre più consumistico. Dall’Europa all’America, i primi coloni irlandesi diedero il via alla cultura del dono che si slegò quasi completamente dal significato più spirituale. È in America che ha origine la tradizione che vede come protagonista San Nicola, meglio noto come Santa Claus e Babbo Natale. Questa figura iconica, ancora oggi, ha il compito di portare i doni ai bambini nelle feste natalizie.
