All’inizio del XX secolo, la popolazione iniziò a diminuire a causa di vari fattori, tra cui le malattie causate dai turisti in visita e l’impatto della prima guerra mondiale. La popolazione è diminuita da 112 nel 1851 a soli 36 nel 1930, quando i residenti rimanenti hanno chiesto di evacuare l’isola, citando condizioni di vita insostenibili.L’isola è ora disabitata ma rimane un duplice patrimonio mondiale dell’UNESCO.
