«Quando nel 2018 M. Il figlio del secolo è arrivato nelle librerie, ci è sembrato che sugli scaffali dell’Archivio dei diari succedesse qualcosa» commentano gli organizzatori «come se per il tempo sufficiente a leggere il romanzo documentario di Antonio Scurati, gli autori di migliaia di diari scritti tra la fine della Prima guerra mondiale e la fine della Seconda trattenessero il fiato e rivolgessero il loro sguardo verso quelle pagine che riempivano un vuoto. La storia di Benito Mussolini dall’ascesa al potere fino alla morte, scritta in parte in prima persona, saldamente poggiata su una mole impressionante di documenti, si intrecciava inestricabilmente con quella di ognuno di loro, di migliaia di italiani “qualunque”, uomini e donne, giovani e anziani, fascisti e antifascisti che avevano scritto di sé per lasciare un segno nella storia e un contributo alla ricostruzione dei fatti. La storia scritta “dal basso” e “di lato” dell’uomo che aveva dominato la scena pubblica e le loro vite per più di vent’anni completava il significato dei loro racconti, ne scioglieva i nodi irrisolti, donava uno slancio imprevisto all’esercizio della memoria, alla ricostruzione della storia e soprattutto alla comprensione del presente. Perché quella storia, che anche noi pensavamo di conoscere e che non sapevamo di non sapere, nessuno l’aveva mai scritta affinché fosse, oggi, alla portata di tutti. È stato sorprendente scoprirlo, ma anche rivelatore: grazie allo sforzo letterario di uno scrittore, abbiamo capito quanti mali del presente affondano in un non detto. Un non detto sul quale Scurati ritorna anche nella nota introduttiva all’ultimo libro della serie, M. La fine e il principio (Bompiani, 2025) con un monito in cui riconosciamo il più alto significato della sua opera: Oggi più di quando cominciai questo racconto, un numero consistente e crescente di italiani, europei, americani tende a disconoscere, a negare, persino a rimpiangere questa terribile storia. Si preparano così a ripeterla in nuove forme. Oggi più che mai, perciò, diviene necessario continuare a raccontarla. Assumersene la responsabilità. Di fronte al passato, al presente e, soprattutto, al futuro».
