Anche quest’anno l’amministrazione comunale ha ricordato quel drammatico mattino di 79 anni fa in cui la Torre di Berta fu abbattuta dai soldati Tedeschi. Come da tradizione alle prime luci dell’alba, alle 5 in punto, 79 rintocchi sono stati scaditi dal campanile del Duomo, uno in più ogni anno che passa. Alle 11.45 poi nella Sala del Consiglio di Palazzo delle Laudi il presidente del Consiglio comunale Antonello Antonelli ha presieduto un incontro pubblico al quale hanno partecipato le forze militari, alcuni cittadini e i rappresentanti locali dell’ANPI.
“Sono trascorsi 79 anni, dall’abbattimento della Torre di Berta. Dopo cosi tanto tempo, i “borghesi” continuano a ricordare la Torre e il giorno del suo abbattimento con immutato affetto e tristezza. Affetto, per il significato identitario che la torre campanaria e la sua inquilina “Buonaventura” hanno incarnato per secoli, riuscendo a scandire i ritmi della vita cittadina, con fedele continuità. Tristezza, per aver perso Il simbolo e il cuore della nostra città fin dal 1200.” Così ha aperto l’incontro il Presidente Antonello Antonelli che ha proseguito il suo racconto sulla torre con queste parole: “una vita molto lunga quella della Torre, testimone di tanti eventi storici, cambiamenti che nello scorrere inesorabile del tempo, hanno trasformato Sansepolcro, i suoi abitanti e le loro abitudini, il succedersi di dominazioni e influenze politiche, terremoti devastanti e pestilenze disastrose. Ma la torre è rimasta sempre li, al suo posto, con il compito di regolare i tempi della vita dei paesani. La Torre non è riuscita però a sopravvivere alla insensata ferocia dei nazisti. L’occupazione dei territori della Valtiberina è costata molte vittime, tra partigiani e cittadini inermi, spesso passati per le armi senza una motivazione chiara, ammesso che esistano motivazioni per uccidere a bruciapelo, magari per sottrarre cibo e animali. Grazie alla resistenza e all’arrivo da Sud delle truppe alleate, inizia la fine dell’occupazione di Sansepolcro nell’estate del 1944. Ma i nazisti, non si risparmiarono l’ultima offesa alla nostra gente, con un atto di ignominia, minando la torre alla sua base, con una quantità di esplosivo tale, da sollevarla verso l’alto, con conseguente ricaduta di detriti a diverse centinaia di metri, tanto che il fenomeno fu con poetica drammaticità definito come “La neve di Luglio”. Il vescovo Pompeo Ghezzi fece suonare tutte le campane del Borgo con rintocchi funebri, gli stessi rintocchi che ogni anno risuonano, uno per ogni anno dalla esplosione. La Torre di Berta deve essere monito per tutti noi, ci deve spingere alla ricerca del dialogo, della comprensione e della compassione, per cercare sempre la strada che porta alla pace: interiore, sociale e fra i popoli.Un ringraziamento va a tutti coloro che con il certosino lavoro di ricerca storica, hanno scritto pagine importanti sulla vita del nostro borgo, grazie ai quali si tramandano e approfondiscono conoscenze di storia e tradizioni, che altrimenti rischierebbero di perdersi. Prima di concludere un pensiero al Capitano Anthony Clarke, l’ufficiale dell’esercito inglese, amante dell’arte e conoscitore ed estimatore del grande concittadino Piero della Francesca, grazie agli scritti di un suo connazionale risalenti al 1925, il quale si fece scrupolo di evitare danni ad un patrimonio artistico inestimabile come il nostro, salvando dalla distruzione quello che dopo la torre sarebbe diventato il simbolo della città in tutto il mondo, oltre ad essere un simbolo di speranza.
