Il prestito del Polittico e di un Crocifisso sagomato di proprietà della Chiesa locale permetterà il restauro di una tela del Berrettini custodita nella Concattedrale di Cortona Due importanti opere di arte sacra sono partite alla volta di New York per essere esposte al Metropolitan Museum of Art all’interno della grande mostra dedicata alla pittura senese del Trecento in programma da ottobre 2024 a gennaio 2025.

Successivamente la stessa esposizione verrà riallestita alla National Gallery di Londra, dove sarà possibile visitarla da marzo a giugno 2025.

Si tratta delle cinque tavole del Polittico di Pietro Lorenzetti (1280-1348), il capolavoro di proprietà della parrocchia della Pieve di Santa Maria in Arezzo e un particolarissimo Crocifisso sagomato in tempera e oro su tavola, sempre di Pietro Lorenzetti, custodito nel museo diocesano di Cortona sin dal 1945. Il primo via libera alla complessa operazione venne dato nel 2019 dall’arcivescovo Riccardo Fontana, con i vertici del Metropolitan e della National Gallery ad Arezzo per un tour preparatorio. L’ok è stato confermato poi dal vescovo Andrea Migliavacca, così come già aveva fatto don Alvaro Bardelli, parroco di Santa Maria della Pieve e tutto il progetto, in questi anni, è stato seguito passo passo dall’Ufficio diocesano per l’Arte Sacra, di concerto con le tante Istituzioni coinvolte. Il Metropolitan Museum of Art e la National Gallery, in cambio del prestito di queste preziose opere della Chiesa locale, finanzieranno il restauro di un’importante tela collocata nella Concattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta in Cortona. Si tratta del Transito di San Giuseppe di Lorenzo Berrettini, cm. 264 x 172, del (1662 – 1672). Per la riuscita del progetto la diocesi ringrazia tutti gli enti coinvolti, a partire dalla Soprintendenza, guidata dall’architetto Gabriele Nannetti coadiuvato dai suoi funzionari, l’Istituto Centrale di Restauro di Roma, il restauratore Roberto Saccuman, incaricato dalla National Gallery e Met e lo Studio Lauria di Grosseto che ha progettato l’articolato sistema che ha permesso di poter trasportare in sicurezza le opere.L’origine del Polittico è raccontata da Giorgio Vasari. Nel 1320 Pietro Lorenzetti venne chiamato ad Arezzo dal vescovo Guido Tarlati per affrescare la tribuna e l’abside della pieve di Santa Maria, dipingendo dodici storie della Vergine culminanti nell’Assunzione. Il Crocifisso sagomato cortonese è databile intorno al 1315-20, nel periodo in cui Lorenzetti stava realizzando molte opere nella cittadina etrusca. Il Cristo viene rappresentato mentre sta esalando l’ultimo respiro. Ai lati sono rappresentati la Vergine e san Giovanni. L’opera è stata probabilmente eseguita su legno sagomato per creare un’immagine che desse l’impressione di una scultura.
