Il calendario fissa la sua memoria liturgica al 17 gennaio. Quel giorno si ricorda, infatti, sant’Antonio abate, uno dei grandi padri del monachesimo orientale, conosciuto però molto di più – a livello popolare – per essere il patrono degli animali.
Sant’Antonio Abate, di origine egiziana e morto nel deserto della Tebaide il 17 gennaio del 357, è venerato come il Santo patrono degli animali domestici, spesso raffigurato accanto a un maialino con una campanella al collo. In occasione della sua festa, non si celebrano solo gli animali e la vita del santo; questo particolarmente momento scandisce il ciclo agricolo tra semina e raccolta. In alcuni casi i festeggiamenti prevedono la benedizione degli animali, in particolare dei maiali. In varie regioni d’Italia, la sera del 17 gennaio, si accendono falò, simbolo della volontà di abbandonare il passato e iniziare un nuovo anno. Questi fuochi purificatori spesso sono accompagnati da processioni e celebrazioni, soprattutto in luoghi del Bel Paese particolarmente legati a Sant’Antonio Abate, come l’Abruzzo, dove si svolgono processioni in costumi tipici dell’Ottocento Secondo la leggenda, nella notte del 17 gennaio, gli animali acquisiscono la facoltà di parlare (se questa credenza fosse vera, chissà cosa racconterebbero di ciò che vedono e subiscono…). In passato, i contadini evitavano le stalle durante questa notte poiché ascoltare gli animali parlare era considerato di cattivo auspicio.
