Leggendo nei giorni scorsi che l’invasore dell’Ucraina Putin, ha ricordato il suo milione di morti e feriti in quel contesto bellico, mentre i morti e feriti ucraini sarebbero circa mezzo milione, ho pensato al Cimitero Militare Germanico istituito vicino al passo della Futa, a mezza strada tra Firenze e Bologna, al centro quasi della Linea gotica, la linea difensiva fortificata organizzata dal Tirreno all’Adriatico dall’esercito tedesco nel tentativo di impedire l’avanzata verso nord degli anglo-americani e proteggere la Repubblica nazi-fascista di Salò.
Sulla linea gotica morirono migliaia di soldati provenienti dalla Germania (e anche dall’Austria occupata dai nazisti nel 1938), e dalla Gran Bretagna (e sue colonie) così come dagli Stati Uniti, prima che essa cedesse e i resti dell’esercito inviato a conquistare il mondo dalla mania di dominio di Hitler, con l’acquiescenza, purtroppo, di tanta parte della popolazione tedesca, cercassero la via del Brennero per tornare in Germania, senza sapere che anche la loro patria era stata a sua volta invasa dagli eserciti russi, inglesi, francesi e americani. Il Cimitero militare della Futa, che sorge a 950 metri s.l.m., fu costruito dall’architetto tedesco Dieter Oesterlen con la precisa volontà di eliminare totalmente ogni idea volta a glorificare degli “eroi” o a esaltare la guerra. E, per quanto ho avvertito io le tante volte che l’ho visitato, sempre con grande commozione, da sola, o con gli amici della chiesa luterana di Firenze, in questo cimitero ci si confronta non con l’esaltazione della guerra, ma proprio col suo contrario, la crudeltà, la tragicità nuda e cruda di essa. E quegli uomini, i cui resti mortali sappiamo essere lì, sotto terra, sono solo uomini, non eroi, anche se avranno fatto qualche atto di eroismo che non è dato sapere; sono povere persone gettate allo sbaraglio per fare grande una nazione guidata, anzi sedotta, da chi non conosceva alcun limite alla propria sete di potenza. Qualcuno di questi uomini avrà creduto alla giustezza di quella guerra, e avrà vestito con entusiasmo la divisa della Wehrmacht (l’esercito tedesco), o addirittura quella delle SS, tanti altri, probabilmente, saranno partiti per uno dei numerosi fronti di quel conflitto solo perché non potevano fare altrimenti. Vittime designate, in un modo o nell’altro. Proprio come successe agli Italiani sbattuti a morire in Albania, Grecia, Russia, Africa Orientale … La moltitudine di piccole lapidi di pietra, che spesso segnalano la presenza di più di una salma, ciascuna col nome del caduto, la sua data di nascita e di morte e il suo grado militare (ove possibile), ci mettono a contatto con più di trentamila vite spezzate – vite per la maggior parte nel fiore degli anni: ventenni, al massimo trentenni (rari quelli più anziani), e ci possiamo immaginare i loro sogni, le loro famiglie, madri e padri e fratelli e sorelle, o giovani spose e bambini magari neonati, che questi uomini neppure hanno potuto conoscere … E poi, un’ancor maggiore crudeltà – Ein unbekannter Soldat – si capisce anche a non sapere il tedesco: un soldato ignoto. Quelli trovati senza piastrina di riconoscimento, quelli, per le cui famiglie non ci sarà mai la consolazione di visitarne una tomba certa, a meno che qualche visitatore ne onori uno, due, tre per tutti, soprattutto soffermandosi in meditazione o preghiera, lasciando che sia la natura a fornire i suoi piccoli fiori a primavera. Ho un ricordo ancora vivido che risale al 1972. Erano passati 27 anni dalla fine della guerra ed erano in vita ancora molti familiari dei caduti della Futa. Fu la mia prima visita al cimitero e, nella segreteria, trovai dei registri dove i visitatori potevano lasciare una testimonianza del loro passaggio. Quei messaggi, in cui padri, madri, spose, figli e figlie, che il padre non avevano conosciuto o ne avevano solo un vago ricordo, parlavano col loro congiunto caduto (“se tu fossi ancora con noi ora avresti 50 anni …”), gli scrivevano parole d’amore, ricordi di quando quei giovani era ancora in vita … non posso descrivere quanto entrassero nel profondo della mia anima, no, non trovo parole per dirlo. Era una comunicazione da anima ad anima. Quelle letture mi hanno forgiato la coscienza. E, poiché sono convinta che conoscere meglio e visitare questo cimitero sia proprio un’esperienza spirituale, prima di passare alle informazioni sulla sua nascita, segnalo il bell’articolo di Sofia Nannini ed Elena Pirazzoli dal titolo Il cimitero degli altri che offre molte informazioni utili a una conoscenza approfondita di questo luogo. La storia della costruzione di questo cimitero che, coi suoi 12 ettari di superficie, è il più grande in Italia, e si sviluppa lungo le pendici del rilievo montuoso assecondando con lievi terrazzamenti il naturale andamento del terreno, inizia nel 1955 con un accordo fra Italia e repubblica Federale di Germania allo scopo di dare una sistemazione definitiva delle salme dei soldati tedeschi caduti in territorio italiano; lo Stato italiano avrebbe dovuto fornire gratuitamente e in uso perpetuo le aree da destinare ai cimiteri di guerra, a tutto il resto avrebbe pensato la Germania Ovest. I lavori cominciarono nel 1961 e l’inaugurazione ufficiale si tenne il 28 giugno 1969. In esso riposano 30.683 salme provenienti da diversi cimiteri sparsi per la penisola. A recuperare le salme e trasferirle nel nuovo cimitero provvide Gustav Lorenz, il primo custode del cimitero.
