Pieve Santo Stefano, 18 settembre 2022 La Giuria nazionale del 38° Premio Pieve Saverio Tutino ha premiato Ado Clocchiatti autore della memoria Addio Patria matrigna. La cerimonia di premiazione, condotta da Guido Barbieri, sarà trasmessa lunedì 19 settembre alle 20:30 da Rai Radio3 Nato a Udine nel 1883 in una famiglia di conciapelli, Ado dovrà abbandonare gli studi nonostante la “distinzione” con cui ottiene la licenza elementare. Scrive la sua memoria nel 1916, poco prima della chiamata alle armi per difendere la stessa “maledetta patria” che lo ha costretto a una vita di migrazioni, povertà, lavori durissimi in condizioni al limite della sopravvivenza, e che gli sta chiedendo di combattere il “nemico” dal quale ha dovuto elemosinare il lavoro per sopravvivere.
Ado ha lavorato in Baviera, Austria, Slovenia e Italia. Arruolato il 27 luglio 1916, muore di febbre spagnola a Legnano il 7 ottobre 1918. «In questa memoria di una vita breve e struggente» si legge nella motivazione della Giuria, «scritta con una intensità che coinvolge e commuove, emergono la saggezza e la rassegnazione di un vinto che sa di non poter cambiare il proprio destino. Durante la Prima Guerra mondiale, Ado, da pochi anni sposo e padre, forse presagendo che non riuscirà a tornare a casa (morirà di spagnola nel 1918) decide di raccontare la sua storia. Friulano, nato in una famiglia poverissima nel 1883 a Pasian di Prato, nonostante sia uno dei migliori allievi della scuola elementare deve iniziare a lavorare ad appena 10 anni per contribuire al sostentamento della famiglia. Ma il lavoro non c’è e inizia così una lunga storia di migrazione stagionale in Germania e nel vicino Impero austro ungarico. Ado ci racconta dall’interno la tragedia dello sfruttamento minorile, perché i bambini vengono messi a lavorare in condizioni terribili. Maltrattamenti, fame e violenze fisiche erano quotidiane. Un povero per vivere deve soffocare l’amore e viene condannato a vivere come la bestia, lavorare, mangiare, se un povero avesse i sentimenti di divenire un uomo, per mancanza di mezzi deve rimanere ignorante, così va il mondo.
Ma Ado diventerà un uomo, fin troppo presto. Lavorerà sempre, perché i genitori malati non riescono a provvedere alla famiglia. C’è un movimento continuo di partenze e ritorni. Più si rende conto della fragilità dei genitori, più il giovanissimo Ado si assume quasi il compito di tenere insieme i suoi cari. Ma la speranza di restare uniti viene continuamente frustrata dalla mancanza di lavoro. Il legame con il padre diventa inscindibile. Emigrano e cercano di trovare lavoro negli stessi cantieri, passando per Vienna e Abbazia dove scoprono le bellezze dell’archittettura, delle città e del mare che gli era sempre stata negata. Il rapporto di protezione reciproca via via si rovescia perché diventa il più giovane a prendersi cura dell’altro: per il padre sfinito nel corpo e nella mente si aprono le porte del manicomio.
Io facevo quei muri, proprio quella casa, che in compagnia di quei poveri dementi che dovevano entrarvi era pure destinato il mio buon padre!. Il destino non vuole dare tregua ad Ado: anche se non gli rimangono molte “pagine di vita” da scrivere, la sua testimonianza brilla per profondità e umanità e riscatta la brutalità dell’esistenza a cui è stato condannato».
L’opera è premiata con 1.000€ e la pubblicazione del testo, entro il 2023, a cura della casa editrice Terre di Mezzo nella collana dedicata ai testi dell’Archivio Diaristico Nazionale.

Venne un tempo che il padre mio si ammalò; era proprio la nostra una famiglia disgraziata?
si credeva che in breve lui guarisse, ma nel suo mestiere di conciappelli aveva preso
una umidità nelle gambe che a stento camminava era sano di fisicho ma le gambe pocho li
servivano, e lui che di giovine aveva sempre superato grandi camminate li pareva impossibile
esser ridotto così, fin che la Società Mutuo Socorso gli passava la pagha di cui lui aveva
diritto ricevere (esendo egli arruolato a questa Società) tanto si faceva corraggio; ma visto
che la sua guarigione era incerta e il tempo del dato sussidio era scaduto, era aflitto e pensava
come la povera famiglia dovesse pur troppo doveva languire nella più scuallida miseria.
Io frequentavo la classe quinta elementare ed aveva compiti i dieci anni veniva a casa di
scuola e lo trovavo pensoso e dolente, non aveva il corraggio domandare da mangiare perché
non c’era e con un paio di uova si faceva la cena in tutti, grazie a Dio qualche buon ragazzo
che era a scuola con mè di famiglie signorili mi davano sempre qualche quatrino e qualche
pane, avendo io narrato a loro le mie sciagure.
Così si tirava inanzi il mondo fra la miseria ed il dolore.
Venne il tempo che io feci gli esami e con sommo piacere del maestro che mi voleva
bene e dei poveri genitori fui promosso con distinzione; il maestro mi domandò se io potessi
continuare la scuola mi sarebbe passato un piccolo sussidio dalla Comune di Udine essendo
io di famiglia povera. Ma hoimè potevo io continuare la scuola mentre i genitori non fidavano
lora che io potessi aiutarli; il sussidio che mi sarebbe stato passato era appena bastante
per comperarmi i libri, e i miei poveri genitori come potevano mantenermi e vestirmi un
pò pulito?
Era impossibile; così con tutto l’amore che io avevo per la scuola vedendo davanti a me
tutti questi ostacoli insuperabili e considerando che io ero di somma necessità di guadagnare
qualche soldo per la famiglia, pensando al mio crudele destino contro il mio volere
dovetti rispondere al maestro che ciò era impossibile, non posso gli risposi perché sono
troppo povero, a me molto rincresce ma devo rifiutare esendo da quasi un anno mio padre
impotente al lavoro; piansi dalla rabbia, ma Iddio solo sapeva i miei buoni fini ma il mondo
l’ignorava e quando al mondo si è poveri non si è protetti di alcuno benché si sia onesti.
Così dovetti rassegnarmi alla volontà del destino.
