In Grecia moglie di Crono e mamma del popolo greco. Secondo la mitologia Crono ingoiava tutti i figli che Rhea metteva al mondo per paura che uno di essi prendesse il suo trono. La moglie Rhea, un giorno per evitare ciò, quando partorì Zeus, lo nascose in una grotta dell’isola di Creta e diede al marito Crono, da mangiare una pietra.
Anche i Romani erano molto legati al culto della madre e celebravano la Dea Madre, Cibele, madre di Plutone, Cerere, Nettuno, Giunone e Giove. I festeggiamenti in onore della dea duravano una settimana; si chiamavano “Floralia” e proprio come oggi, cadevano nel mese di maggio, quando sbocciavano i fiori. Nella tradizione cristiana, la figura materna è celebrata con la Madonna, da sempre venerata dai fedeli. Anche in questo caso, il mese dedicato alla figura mariana, è il mese di maggio.
In Italia , la prima proposta, per istituire una festa dedicata alle mamme, partì dalla Liguria nel 1956, quando il sindaco di Bordighera Raul Zaccari, decise di celebrare, in una giornata, tutte le mamme del mondo, proponendo la festività anche al Senato. Un anno dopo, il sacerdote Don Otello Migliosi, insisteva sull’importanza che la figura della madre ha nell’ambito religioso, non tanto nella sua veste biologica, quanto piuttosto come figura di unione e dialogo tra diverse culture.
