Nel 251 a.C., durante la prima guerra punica, romani e cartaginesi si affrontarono nella Battaglia di Palermo (o battaglia di Panormus), che si rivelò essere uno degli scontri decisivi. Sul campo, l’esercito cartaginese guidato da Asdrubale schierò la sua arma più potente e distintiva: un’imponente linea di elefanti da guerra. Ecco come andò a finire.
La storia della battaglia di Palermo Le guerre puniche le abbiamo studiate tutti, anche a più riprese considerando scuole elementari, medie e superiori, tuttavia non ricordo di aver studiato le dinamiche di una delle battaglie decisive più spettacolari dell’epoca, resa ancor più interessante dalla potenza dello schieramento cartaginese che mise in campo svariate decine di elefanti, e dalla fine strategia che permise all’esercito romano di avere la meglio sui suoi temibili nemici. Eppure gli scontri tra le truppe erano avvenuti a meno di 1 chilometro dai banchi di scuola sui quali li stavo studiando, anche se sono abbastanza sicuro che nessuno me lo abbia detto a quell’epoca. Vediamo come andarono i fatti. Quella avvenuta nel 251 a.C. è in effetti nota come Seconda Battaglia di Palermo. La prima era stata combattuta 3 anni prima, quando la città era ancora in mano ai cartaginesi. In quell’occasione i romani attaccarono Palermo dal mare con circa 300 navi, cingendola d’assedio.
Dopo un breve scontro contro le sparute truppe cartaginesi poste a guardia della città, i legionari riuscirono a penetrarvi e a conquistarla, lasciando poi una guarnigione per mantenerla sotto il controllo di Roma. Nel frattempo l’esercito cartaginese di Asdrubale, di stanza a Lilibeo nei pressi dell’odierna Marsala, si riorganizzava e raccoglieva le forze in vista di una nuova offensiva che sfruttasse una potente arma segreta: i temibili elefanti da guerra che già nella recente battaglia di Tunisi erano stati in grado di sbaragliare la difesa romana. Dopo oltre un anno in cui i romani avevano evitato lo scontro campo aperto, per non concedere alcun vantaggio ai pachidermi nemici, metà dell’esercito posto a difesa di Palermo fu richiamato nella capitale. Era l’occasione che Asdrubale stava aspettando, con gli avversari indeboliti riconquistare la città sarebbe stato più semplice, anzi, probabilmente sarebbe bastata la vista degli elefanti a fiaccare ogni tentativo di resistenza.
Quindi i cartaginesi si mossero senza indugio da Lilibeo a Palermo, sicuri di battere i romani. In effetti Asdrubale aveva ragione. L’esercito romano guidato dal console Lucio Cecilio Metello non aveva speranze di battere i cartaginesi in uno scontro diretto e solo l’idea degli elefanti bastava ad atterrire i difensori, ma il condottiero di Roma era un fine stratega e aveva studiato un piano per difendere Palermo ad ogni costo. Visto che nessuna delle sue truppe aveva speranza di difendersi dalla carica dei pachidermi, Metello decise di attendere i cartaginesi all’interno della città, dietro le possenti mura. Nonostante le provocazioni degli avversari che intanto stavano devastando i campi e gridando ingiurie per spingere i romani a uscire allo scoperto, le truppe del console restavano in attesa senza reagire.
Vista l’assenza di una benché minima resistenza militare, Asdrubale si convinse del fatto che i romani fossero troppo spaventati per combattere, quindi avanzò superando il fiume Oreto e accostandosi alla città. Fu allora che le porte si aprirono lasciando uscire delle truppe, ma non l’esercito schierato come si aspettavano i cartaginesi.
Uscirono dalla città solo fanti leggeri e arcieri, unità in grado di muoversi molto rapidamente e di solito utilizzate a supporto di altri reparti, che invece in questo caso rimasero ancora in attesa all’interno delle mura. Stuzzicati dalle azioni delle truppe romane, i cartaginesi si schierarono in posizione d’attacco, con gli elefanti in prima linea pronti a caricare, proprio come Cecilio Metello aveva previsto. Gli elefanti usati dall’esercito cartaginese erano dei grossi esemplari maschi, scelti per la loro imponenza ed aggressività. Sul loro dorso venivano montate strutture e torrette sulle quali stavano di solito quattro soldati armati di archi e lance lunghe fino a 6 metri. Delle grandi corazze coprivano orecchie e proboscidi degli animali, per ripararli da colpi e piogge di frecce. Si trattava si veri e propri carri armati del mondo antico, che fino ad allora si erano dimostrati praticamente inarrestabili. Memore delle battaglie precedenti, Cecilio Metello capì che era inutile difendersi in campo aperto, perché i pachidermi avrebbero facilmente sbaragliato qualsiasi schieramento. Quando arcieri e fanti leggeri spinsero i cartaginesi a sferrare il loro attacco, le truppe romane furono veloci a rinculare rifugiandosi nella grande fossa della Garofala, nei pressi del luogo in cui nasceva il fiume Kemonia. In quel vasto fossato il vantaggio degli elefanti era praticamente nullo, anzi la posizione sottomessa permetteva ai soldati romani di scagliare giavellotti e frecce dal basso, contro le pance e le zampe dei grandi animali, che non disponevano di alcuna protezione. Un gruppo di giovani palermitani, qualcuno dice raccattati al mercato, correva avanti e indietro per rifornire i soldati di frecce e giavellotti in quantità industriali. Era tutto come il console aveva previsto. Le sue truppe all’interno del fossato resistevano, dalle mura le baliste lanciavano enormi dardi tra gli schieramenti nemici e gli elefanti feriti e frastornati dal fragore iniziarono ad impazzire, ignorando gli ordini che li spingevano ad avanzare. Quando i pachidermi iniziarono a volgersi in cerca di fuga, calpestando e gettando scompiglio tra le truppe di Cartagine, i legionari romani finalmente uscirono con le armi in pugno, approfittando della confusione per sferrare un attacco decisivo e ben organizzato. Fu una vera disfatta per le truppe di un nervosissimo Asdrubale, che fu costretto ad una precipitosa ritirata, lasciando sul campo numerosi prigionieri e anche una decina di elefanti, che furono catturati e portati a Roma in segno di trionfo. Oltre ad essere decisiva per le sorti della Sicilia, probabilmente la battaglia di Palermo insegnò ai romani che gli elefanti da guerra potevano effettivamente essere sconfitti con una buona dose di astuzia e strategia, un’informazione che si rivelò decisiva nei successivi scontri tra Roma e Cartagine. Per celebrare la vittoria di Panormus, gli eredi di Cecilio Metello iniziarono ad utilizzare l’elefante come simbolo della loro famiglia, così come raffigurato in alcune insegne e monete coniate durante il loro consolato.
