Era in fase di atterraggio l’aereo su cui viaggiava il presidente dell’Eni Enrico Mattei quando una esplosione a bordo lo fece saltare in aria. Si trovava precisamente a 2000 metri da terra, sorvolando l’area di Bascapè, nel pavese. Era 27 ottobre 1962, un minuto e mezzo e il pilota Irnerio Bertuzzi avrebbe concluso le manovre, la serata era come tante di un autunno di pioggia moderata, nuvolosità stratiforme.
Ma tutto ad un tratto i controllori di Linate videro sparire dallo schermo la traccia radar dell’I-Snap dove era salito anche il giornalista dell’ufficio romano di Time Magazine William McHale che stava lavorando ad un servizio su Mattei. Fu come un lampo, il pilota non ebbe il tempo neanche di lanciare il mayday. Per molto tempo si negò addirittura il sabotaggio, i depistaggi furono così tanti e immediati da scompaginare il quadro dei fatti in modo radicale. Così penetrante ed elaborata, diffusa e permanente nel tempo fu l’intromissione che non poté che essere stato il Sifar, il servizio segreto del tempo, al centro di importanti azioni di condizionamento dei governi.Finché un curioso e astuto magistrato della Procura di Pavia di nome Enzo Calia nel settembre del ‘94 non si mise a ripercorrere la trama: l’Eni aveva rottamato i relitti dell’aereo dopo la prima inchiesta ma il magistrato riuscì a inoltrarsi dentro quei meandri grazie ad un piccolo pezzo di metallo che un ex dipendente si era portato a casa come ricordo di Mattei che lui venerava. Costui si recò personalmente nell’ufficio di Calia, sapendo che le indagini erano riprese, e gli consegnò quel piccolo e insignificante pezzo di metallo che divenne un reperto prezioso, insieme a pochi altri – l’orologio che Mattei indossava al momento della morte, l’anello che aveva alla mano sinistra – per dimostrare che era avvenuta una esplosione causata da una carica nascosta nell’aereo. Mattei era temuto un po’ ovunque nel mondo occidentale per l’audacia della sua formula contrattuale del 75/25, introdotta nel contratto Eni-Iran del marzo 1957 e grazie alla quale lo Stato iraniano percepiva il 75% dei profitti derivati dalle operazioni di estrazione del petrolio, il restante 25% andava all’Italia. Mattei era molto orgoglioso di questo schema, come emerge dalle sue parole (emozionanti) al Cda di Eni dell’8 maggio ‘57: “per la prima volta era stato consentito agli Stati del Medioriente di elevarsi a rango di soci di un’impresa europea, di acquistare il diritto di controllare la gestione di risorse nazionali e quindi concorrere all’esercizio di attività alle quali sono legati l’avvenire e la prosperità di quei Paesi. Soprattutto nella presente situazione nazionale abbiamo ragione di ritenere che questo atteggiamento assunto da un Ente pubblico italiano concreti una giusta e lungimirante politica nei riguardi dei Paesi sottosviluppati ma che per le loro grandi risorse naturali sono ovviamente avviati a un prospero a venire”.
