Grazie a loro abile uso del robot, gli esperti hanno avuto l’opportunità di ispezionare più da vicino un ammasso di crosta di ferromanganese , un deposito minerale sedimentario marino costituito da ossidi di ferro e manganese. La muratura era in realtà il risultato di geologia vulcanica che ha fratturato la roccia in modo curiosamente uniforme. “Quella che può sembrare una ‘strada di mattoni gialli’ verso la mitica città di Atlantide è in realtà un esempio di antica geologia vulcanica!” ha spiegato EVNautilus. Il team ha identificato la roccia come ialoclastite, un tipo di roccia vulcanica trovata dove le eruzioni ad alta energia hanno depositato frammenti nel fondo del mare. Il motivo per cui sembra così simile a un mattone è che si è fratturato a causa del ripetuto riscaldamento e raffreddamento mentre si verificavano ulteriori eruzioni nella regione.
