Fondazione CR Firenze e Fondazione AIRC per la ricerca sul cancro assegnano per il 2024 circa 2 milioni di euro per 18 progetti di ricerca e una borsa di studio nell’area fiorentina L’impegno congiunto contribuisce all’avanzamento della ricerca oncologica della comunità scientifica toscana, dalla ricerca di base alla ricerca preclinica, con studi che affrontano diversi tipi di tumore
20 febbraio 2024 – Fondazione CR Firenze e Fondazione AIRC rinnovano una solida partnership sostenendo 18 progetti di ricerca e una borsa di studio con un investimento complessivo di 1.973.080 euro per l’anno in corso. Questo impegno congiunto contribuisce da otto anni a costruire un solido network di relazioni tra i ricercatori nell’area di Firenze e ad accrescere il livello di eccellenza della ricerca oncologica toscana. Per la valutazione e selezione dei progettiFondazione CR Firenze si è affidata al processo di peer review di Fondazione AIRC. Il metodo utilizzato dalle agenzie internazionali di finanziamento della ricerca garantisce valutazioni eque, esperte, indipendenti e per merito dei progetti più promettenti e delle borse di studio, da parte di revisori indipendenti, nel rispetto delle regole sul conflitto di interessi.
La collaborazione tra le due Fondazioni permette di sostenere il lavoro di ricercatrici e ricercatori al lavoro nelle principali istituzioni di ricerca del territorio fiorentino:
- 17 Investigator Grant pressol’Università di Firenze, l’ISPRO di Firenze e l’Azienda USL Toscana Centro. Si tratta di progetti innovativi della durata di cinque anni, guidati da ricercatori affermati, con una solida esperienza.
- 1 My First AIRC Grant presso l’Università di Firenze. Della durata di cinque anni, questi grant sostengono i progetti di ricercatori che non hanno mai avuto un finanziamento AIRC. Sono uno strumento concreto con cui i giovani scienziati possono sperimentare la conduzione del proprio progetto in una struttura italiana di eccellenza e diventare progressivamente autonomi e indipendenti.
- 1 borsa di studio istituita in memoria di Pierluigi Rossi Ferrini, ematologo di fama internazionale,già Consigliere e Vicepresidente della Fondazione CR Firenze, oltre che advisor per il settore Ricerca Scientifica dell’Università di Firenze. La borsa è stata assegnata alla giovane ricercatrice Luisa Maresca.Obiettivo del progetto di ricerca è identificare una nuova combinazione di farmaci per il trattamento del melanoma cutaneo, bloccando la crescita del tumore e stimolando la risposta del sistema immunitario contro di esso.

Una collaborazione che ha permesso di creare un solido network locale, in grado di incrementare un livello scientifico già di per sé di alto livello nel territorio fiorentino. È un modello strategico efficace, che vorremmo riprodurre su tutto il territorio nazionale – sottolinea Federico Caligaris Cappio, Direttore scientifico di Fondazione AIRC –. Fondazione AIRC ha l’obiettivo di trovare la cura del cancro attraverso la ricerca e la ricerca è possibile solo se si investe in essa tempo e denaro. La ricerca è la chiave per arrivare a nuovi metodi di prevenzione, diagnosi e cura sempre più mirati, precisi ed efficaci. Portiamo avanti questi obiettivi con partner che condividono con noi questa visione e credono quanto noi nel valore della ricerca scientifica.” Una partnership, quella tra Fondazione AIRC e Fondazione CR Firenze, che in otto anni ha investito complessivamente 13 milioni di euro a sostegno della migliore ricerca oncologica dell’area fiorentina e ha determinato una crescita progressiva dei finanziamenti sul territorio pari al +163%. Esempio virtuoso che testimonia come un accurato investimento in ricerca possa generare anche un forte impatto in termini di sviluppo locale. La collaborazione tra le due Fondazione costituisce di fatto un modello il cui valore è riconosciuto a livello nazionale ed è valso alla Fondazione CR Firenze il premio ‘Credere nella ricerca’ consegnato dal Presidente della Repubblica Sergio Mattarella a ottobre 2022 durante la Cerimonia di apertura della campagna AIRC ‘I Giorni della ricerca’. “Il cancro – dichiara Bernabò Bocca, Presidente di Fondazione CR Firenze – rappresenta una delle sfide più impegnative e devastanti del nostro tempo che, anche nei nostri territori, colpisce migliaia di vite e di famiglie. Attraverso la ricerca scientifica possiamo dare speranza e lottare per cambiare il corso di questa terribile malattia. Negli anni abbiamo sostenuto le attività di ricerca di oltre 100 ricercatori, di cui, più della metà, ha meno di 40 anni. Ogni loro scoperta, ogni loro progresso porta con sé la promessa di trattamenti più efficaci, di diagnosi più precise e la possibilità di salvare delle vite. Oltre ai 18 progetti di ricerca e alla borsa di studio sostenuti con la collaborazione di Fondazione CR Firenze, Fondazione AIRC finanzia altri 13 progetti di ricerca sul territorio toscano, per un totale di 31 progetti e una borsa di studio con oltre 7 milioni di euro complessivi di investimento.
