Un gioiello di ingegneria romana si trova a Zaghouan, Tunisia. Parliamo di un acquedotto costruito durante il regno dell’Imperatore Adriano nel 122 d.C. Il suo compito? Convogliare l’acqua dal Jebel Zaghouan fino a Cartagine, coprendo una distanza di oltre 132 chilometri. Erinfi tanto? Per darvi un’idea, parliamo di più di 82 miglia! Quest’acquedotto è stato uno dei più lunghi dell’Impero Romano, e dai resti che si trovano vicino a Tunisi si può apprezzare la sofisticata tecnologia idraulica di quel tempo. Ancora più sorprendente, il sistema dell’acquedotto includeva una serie di canali sotterranei e archi sopraelevati, progettati per mantenere un gradiente costante ed efficiente per il flusso dell’acqua.
L’acqua trasportata giocava un ruolo cruciale nel rifornire terme, fontane e abitazioni private a Cartagine, supportando l’ampia infrastruttura urbana della città.
Inoltre, la fonte dell’acquedotto a Jebel Zaghouan è contrassegnata da un tempio dedicato al dio dell’acqua, Nettuno, riflettendo la profonda stima dei Romani per l’acqua ed il suo ruolo fondamentale nella loro civiltà. Questa antica meraviglia ingegneristica non solo esemplifica il progresso dei Romani in idraulica, ma anche la loro capacità di integrare infrastrutture pratiche con significato culturale e religioso.
