Per 44 giorni ho vissuto nell’attesa tra una telefonata e l’altra, sentendomi viva solo quando avevo notizie da mio fratello. Ogni giorno provavo frustrazione, ma soprattutto temevo le 9 del mattino. Potrebbe sembrare strano odiare un momento specifico della giornata. Ma ogni giorno alle 9 ricevevamo la lista delle perdite della giornata precedente. Tutti in Armenia odiavamo quell’ora. Aprivamo la lunga lista delle persone decedute, sperando di non vedere il nome di nessuno che conoscessimo.
Leggevamo una cosa così triste, che diventava motivo di gioia se non conoscevamo nessuno in quella lista. È una tragedia, e ora che lo dico ad alta voce, suona assurdo. Ma ho iniziato a pensare in modo non convenzionale. Mi chiedevo se ci fosse una lista anche dall’altra parte. Stavano perdendo anche loro persone, vero? Significava che condividevamo il dolore con i nostri nemici? Abbiamo condiviso lo stesso dolore, la stessa sofferenza. Siamo ancora nemici se il nostro dolore è lo stesso? Se avessi condiviso questi pensieri con altre persone, mi avrebbero considerato una traditrice, i tempi erano così. A volte volevo trovare una persona dall’altra parte, qualcuno che si stava facendo le stesse domande, e chiederle: “Come stai? Spero che la tua famiglia stia bene e che questo disastro finisca presto”. Non l’ho mai fatto, perché avevo paura che non ci fosse nessuno dall’altra parte che stesse pensando in quel modo, che stesse pensando al suo ‘nemico’.
Non è facile, ci vuole molto coraggio per spegnere il telefono, la televisione, allontanarsi dalle notizie, dall’odio, per essere più alti della guerra e pensare alle persone, senza separarle in nostro e loro, buoni e cattivi, giusti e sbagliati. Amici e nemici. Dopo 44 giorni la guerra si è fermata, ma i sentimenti e le domande che avevo sono rimasti nella mia testa fino al giorno in cui finalmente ho incontrato qualcuno dall’altra parte. Il mio ‘nemico’. Prima dell’incontro avevo milioni di domande, ma nel momento in cui l’ho visto, le ho dimenticate tutte. Perché quando l’ho visto, era solo una persona, non importava la nazionalità, non ho sentito odio, eravamo dalla stessa parte e avevamo passato l’inferno insieme. Ho capito che il dolore che provavo non era esclusivo dei 3 milioni di Armeni; si estendeva oltre i confini. Anche loro avevano la lista. Piangevamo le stesse perdite. Sentivamo lo stesso dolore. Nel mondo dove le guerre esistono ancora, l’intera umanità sopporta quel dolore. E forse ci sono Paesi di cui non haimai sentito parlare, ma il tuo cuore si spezza ogni volta che senti parlare di una guerra. Come fanno a scegliere la guerra anziché la pace, anziché l’amore? Sono felice di non capire questo e saprò di aver perso la testa se un giorno inizierò a capirlo.
