Concerto di martedì 29 aprile Medolla (MO), Teatro Facchini, ore 21:00 Un ritorno a Medolla (MO) a tutto swing: il festival itinerante Crossroads fa nuovamente tappa nella cittadina modenese portando il “padrino dello swing” britannico al Teatro Facchini. Parliamo del cantante e sassofonista Ray Gelato, che si esibirà martedì 29 aprile alle ore 21 assieme ai suoi celeberrimi Giants, formazione dalla verve incontenibile:
Danny Marsden (tromba), Andy Rogers (trombone), Olly Wilby (sax alto e tenore), Gunther Kurmayr (pianoforte), Manuel Alvarez (contrabbasso), Ed Richardson (batteria). Il britannico Ray Gelato incarna il jazz nel suo aspetto di massimo entertainment. Quello che non solo vi farà battere il proverbiale piede, ma anche schioccare le dita, ciondolare la testa e presumibilmente saltare sulla sedia. Lo spirito originario del jazz, quello di una musica ritmica che è joie de vivre, che fa ballare (dove si può) ma che rimane perfetta anche per il solo ascolto, col suo trasporto ruggente (quando Ray imbraccia il sax) e con il suo malizioso storytelling (con Ray in veste di cantante). Insomma, Ray Gelato va annoverato tra i pesi massimi del revival swing con in più l’effetto turbo conferitogli dal jump blues.
Nato a Londra nel 1961, Ray Gelato forma la propria identità musicale sui dischi del padre, un militare americano di stanza in Europa: swing anni Quaranta, R&B e rock and roll anni Cinquanta. Appena ventenne, Ray aveva già intrapreso la carriera professionale come alfiere di questi eccitanti stili: prima in una fortunata band diretta assieme al chitarrista francese Patrice Serapiglia, poi con i propri Giants of Jive. A metà degli anni Novanta crea una nuova formazione, destinata a lunga vita, i Giants, la cui fama si estende su scala planetaria, ravvivata anche dalle partecipazioni cinematografiche di Ray e dall’utilizzo della loro versione di Tu vuò fà l’americano per un celebre spot della Levi’s. Eroe in patria (ha suonato due volte per la regina, al matrimonio di Paul McCartney con Heather Mills ed è praticamente un’istituzione al Ronnie Scott’s), Ray vanta un particolare feeling col pubblico italiano. Da ricordare le sue collaborazioni, anche su disco, coi nostri Good Fellas. Crossroads 2025 è organizzato come sempre da Jazz Network ETS in collaborazione con l’Assessorato alla Cultura della Regione Emilia-Romagna, con il sostegno del Ministero della Cultura e di numerose altre istituzioni e con il patrocinio di ANCI Emilia-Romagna.
