Il 2 novembre si celebra la Commemorazione dei Defunti, nota come il “Giorno dei Morti”. una giornata dedicata a onorare i propri cari scomparsi con preghiere e visite al cimitero, dove si portano fiori come i crisantemi. Le tradizioni variano a livello regionale, con ricette tipiche e l’usanza di allestire tavole imbandite per i defunti.
Il giorno precedente la Festa dei Morti è Ognissanti, le cui prime tracce risalgono al IV secolo d.C. Questa festa è stata istituita per onorare tutti i santi cristiani che non sono inclusi nel calendario ufficiale. La scelta del 1° novembre come data è collegata alla festa celtica di “ Samhain”. Essa celebra il ritorno dei defunti dall’aldilà per visitare i propri cari. Al fine di ridurre l’aspetto pagano di questa celebrazione – che alla fine ha dato origine ad Halloween – la Chiesa decise di istituire la Festa di Ognissanti il 1° novembre e la Festa dei Morti il giorno successivo, cercando così di cristianizzare e conferire un significato spirituale a questa antica tradizione.
