Da Tobolsk, una donna e suo figlio partirono verso ovest con un’idea che sembrava più grande di loro: cambiare destino.Non avevano una carovana, né protezioni speciali. Solo il necessario e una convinzione ostinata: quel ragazzo doveva studiare, costi quel che costi.Lui si chiamava Dmitri Mendeléyev.

Non era il tipo che accetta il mondo “così com’è”. Dentro di lui c’era una specie di bisogno: trovare collegamenti, mettere ordine, capire perché le cose funzionano.Il primo tentativo fu Mosca.Arrivarono fin lì, ma l’università non lo accolse. Fine del sogno? Per molti sì.Per sua madre no.Fece quello che fanno le persone davvero determinate: riprovò da un’altra parte.Ripresero a viaggiare verso San Pietroburgo, adattandosi a ogni mezzo e a ogni strada possibile. Non era un viaggio comodo, ma era il viaggio giusto.E lì, finalmente, una porta si aprì: l’Istituto Pedagogico lo ammise.Da quel momento Dmitri si tuffò nello studio con una fame rara: chimica, fisica, matematica… tutto. Passava ore a confrontare, scrivere, ragionare, come se stesse cercando un disegno nascosto sotto la superficie del mondo.Poco tempo dopo, sua madre non poté più seguirlo.Ma aveva già fatto la sua parte più importante: lo aveva portato esattamente dove doveva arrivare.Anni dopo, Mendeléyev avrebbe lasciato un segno enorme nella scienza creando la Tavola Periodica degli elementi.Non fu solo una lista: era un modo nuovo di vedere la materia. E la cosa incredibile è che Dmitri non si limitò a sistemare ciò che già si sapeva: capì che mancavano dei “posti”, e intuì l’esistenza di elementi non ancora scoperti, descrivendone persino le caratteristiche.In pratica: trasformò un insieme di pezzi sparsi in una mappa.E pensare che tutto è iniziato così:con una madre che, davanti a un rifiuto, ha detto “ok… allora ripartiamo”.Perché prima di essere una scoperta…a volte è semplicemente qualcuno che crede in te più di quanto tu riesca a fare
