Un velo di pioggia annebbiava la solitaria campagna e acuiva il senso di tristezza che veniva dalle memorie della città morta Le memorie del fato della bella città romana d’Altino, distrutta dai barbari e dalla malaria, erano ridestate e colorite dalla presenza dei militari I soldati avevano messo allo scoperto qualche pezzo di mosaico pavimentale romano. Sulle macerie di scavo si vedeva una bella anfora con la bocca piena di terra”
