Gli accordi di Parigi per il cessate il fuoco in Vietnam dopo quasi 60mila morti Usa gli valsero un controverso premio Nobel per la Pace: due giurati si dimisero per protesta. Kissinger fu di fatto un presidente ombra, anche se la scrivania dell’Ufficio ovale restò sempre per lui un miraggio impossibile per il fatto di non essere nato negli Usa. La sconfitta di Ford e l’elezione del democratico Jimmy Carter segnarono la fine della sua carriera pubblica, non dell’impegno in politica estera attraverso gruppi come la Trilaterale. Dopo aver lasciato il governo nel 1977, Kissinger fondò il celebre studio di consulenza Kissinger Associates, attraverso la cui porta girevole passarono ministri e sottosegretari e i cui clienti erano governi mondiali grandi e piccoli.
