La popolazione è diminuita da 112 nel 1851 a soli 36 nel 1930, quando i residenti rimanenti hanno chiesto di evacuare l’isola, citando condizioni di vita insostenibili.L’isola è ora disabitata ma rimane un duplice patrimonio mondiale dell’UNESCO.
