La “prima pietra” posata a Genova fa parte di una struttura che, a lavori finiti, sarà lunga 45.000 chilometri: sarà il cavo sottomarino più lungo del mondo.Sono tanti i protagonisti di questa operazione, da Meta – che già lo scorso anno aveva mostrato il progetto in dettaglio – a China Mobile International, fino a Orange, Vodafone, MTN GlobalConnect, stc, Telecom Egitto e WIOCC. Il consorzio spiega che la posa di Genova “apre la strada alle future operazioni di posa, che avverranno nei prossimi mesi“. La conclusione dei lavori è prevista per il 2024, quando saranno 46 le località connesse. Per quanto riguarda Genova, è prevista la creazione di un percorso terrestre che collega la stazione di posa dei cavi del capoluogo ligure ai principali Carrier Neutral Data Center (CNDC)* di Milano.Il cavo sottomarino – comprensivo della sua estensione Pearls che arriverà fino alla Penisola Arabica, al Pakistan e all’India – fornirà connettività al 36% della popolazione mondiale toccando tre continenti: Europa, Africa e Asia. Sarà essenziale per l’accesso a diverse tipologie di servizi, specie per i Paesi in cui ad oggi la connessione ancora non è disponibile o lo è solo parzialmente. Si pensi in particolare ai campi “dell’istruzione, dell’assistenza sanitaria e del business, con tutti i benefici economici e sociali derivanti dal miglioramento delle condizioni di connettività“.2Africa è destinato ad essere un “catalizzatore di cambiamento nel mercato della banda larga“: la sua posa potrà portare benefici socio-economici alla popolazione ed al tessuto produttivo del territorio.
