Si comprende quindi come Eraclio fece di tutto per giungere ad un accomodamento con gli Avari: prima nel 623 (a rischio della sua vita) e poi nel 624, in preparazione di una nuova campagna persiana. Questi però, nel corso del 623, conquistarono Ancyra sull’altopiano anatolico e – con una nuova flotta mediterranea – presero Rodi, crocevia delle comunicazioni mediterranee.
