scoprì Tritone, satellite di Nettuno.Tritone è il più grande dei 14 satelliti in orbita attorno a Nettuno ed è l’unica grande luna del sistema solare che orbita attorno al proprio pianeta con moto retrogrado. La sua distanza (media) da Nettuno è di circa 355 mila km e compie un’orbita attorno al pianeta in poco meno di sei giorni. Per la sua orbita retrograda e per la sua composizione, simile a quella di Plutone, probabilmente non si è formato nei pressi di Nettuno ma sembra provenire dalla Fascia di Kuiper e successivamente “catturato” gravitazionalmente da Nettuno. Tritone è stato sorvolato da un’unica sonda spaziale, la Voyager 2, nel 1989 arrivando ad una distanza di soli 40 mila Km studiandone la composizione e la morfologia.
