Il 9 novembre 2021, nella Tenuta Bellavista Insuese Collesalvetti – Livorno un membro del Gruppo Archeologico Paleontologico Livornese, mentre percorreva un terreno declive interessato da un recente taglio boschivo, scorgeva tra le foglie alcune monete all’apparenza antiche. Contattata immediatamente la Soprintendenza, inviava le foto del ritrovamento. Nei giorni successivi la Sopraintendenza provvedeva ad effettuare uno scavo. Il tesoretto rinvenuto, di età tardo repubblicana, è composto da 175 denari di argento in buono stato di conservazione ad eccezione di due monete fratturate e ricomponibili.
I denari sono databili, secondo Crawford, tra il 157-156 a.C. e l’82 a.C. Ad eccezione delle emissioni più antiche, databili tra il 157-156 ed il 110 a.C. e attestate in 1 o al massimo 2-3 esemplari, la presenza di gruppi più numerosi inizia a partire dal decennio 109-100 a.C. per poi raddoppiare nei decenni successivi. La massima concentrazione si ha per gli anni tra il 91 e l’88 a.C. del bellum sociale in cui la massa delle coniazioni rispecchia la grande movimentazione di uomini e mezzi da parte di Roma contro la rivolta dei socii italici. Successivamente abbiamo una riduzione numerica fino all’82 a.C. La zecca è sempre quella di Roma ad eccezione di un esemplare della zecca di Narbona di L. Pomponius del 118 a.C. Il tesoretto potrebbe essere il risparmio di un militare impegnato già nella Guerra Sociale e forse anche in quella tra Silla ed i mariani . Una volta ritornato alla sua casa e ai suoi campi, avrebbe nascosto sotto un albero del vicino bosco i denari d’argento, che non sarebbe mai più tornato a recuperare. Lo studio del materiale rinvenuto ha occupato più di un anno ed è avvenuto grazie al lavoro della Soprintendenza in sinergia con il Museo di Storia Naturale di Livorno. Il Museo di Storia Naturale del Mediterraneo della Provincia di Livorno e la Regione Toscana hanno finanziato la stampa del catalogo e la realizzazione della mostra che sarà inaugurata a breve presso il Museo stesso.
