Correggio (RE), Teatro Asioli, ore 21:00 FAMOUDOU DON MOYE mnCome componente dell’Art Ensemble of Chicago ha lasciato un segno indelebile nella storia del jazz degli ultimi cinque decenni. Ma il batterista e percussionista Famoudou Don Moye ha sviluppato importanti progetti da leader anche senza i compagni dell’AEOC: ne è un vibrante esempio il Percussion & Brass Express Trio (con Christophe Leloil alla tromba e Simon Sieger a pianoforte, organo e trombone).

La band si esibirà in concerto sabato 27 maggio al Teatro Asioli di Correggio (RE) per un nuovo appuntamento del festival Crossroads (inizio alle ore 21).Crossroads 2023 è organizzato da Jazz Network in collaborazione con l’Assessorato alla Cultura della Regione Emilia-Romagna e con il sostegno del Ministero della Cultura e di numerose altre istituzioni. Il festival vanta il patrocinio di ANCI Emilia-Romagna e di SIAE. Il concerto è realizzato in collaborazione con il Comune di Correggio nell’ambito di Correggio Jazz. Biglietti: prezzo unico euro 15 (posto numerato).Don Moye (Rochester, New York, 1946), dopo essersi diplomato in percussioni alla Wayne State University di Detroit, nel 1968 si unisce alla Detroit Free Jazz Band per un tour attraverso l’Europa e il Nord Africa. Qui conosce il pianista Randy Weston e ha l’opportunità di approfondire la conoscenza delle tecniche e dei ritmi di diverse tribù africane. Risiede per un breve periodo a Roma, dove lavora anche per la RAI, e nel 1969 si trasferisce a Parigi, dove collabora, tra gli altri, con Steve Lacy, Pharoah Sanders, Sonny Sharrock e Art Taylor. Nello stesso anno giungono nella capitale francese Roscoe Mitchell, Lester Bowie, Malachi Favors e Joseph Jarman. I quattro dell’Art Ensemble of Chicago sono alla ricerca di un batterista e incontrano Don Moye durante una session presso l’American Center of Students and Artists. Dopo la parentesi parigina, Don Moye ritorna negli Stati Uniti al seguito dei suoi compagni, diventa “Famoudou” Don Moye e si trasferisce a Chicago. Con il suo drumming asciutto e insieme esplosivo, con la sua espressività esuberante, a tratti giocosa, ricca di stilemi africani e caraibici e di una forte coloritura timbrica, Don Moye si integra perfettamente con la poetica musicale dell’AEOC, dando forma definitiva a uno dei gruppi più influenti, apprezzati e longevi della storia del jazz. Moye dà anche un contributo determinante all’elaborazione degli aspetti teatrali e ritualistici della formazione. Oltre alla sua attività con l’AEOC, incredibilmente ricca di produzioni discografiche (nel 2019 il gruppo ha festeggiato il cinquantesimo anniversario), Moye ha collaborato con molti altri musicisti: Archie Shepp, Don Cherry, Steve Lacy, Pharoah Sanders, Cecil Taylor, Dave Burrell, Gato Barbieri, Don Pullen, Kirk Lightsey, Hamiet Bluiett, Julius Hemphill, Chico Freeman, la Brass Fantasy di Lester Bowie, la all stars The Leaders. Ha inoltre creato l’ottetto Sun Percussion Summit per esplorare le tradizioni percussive della musica afroamericana. Moye è anche molto legato alla scena italiana: ha collaborato con Franco D’Andrea, Enrico Pieranunzi, Enrico Rava, Pino Daniele, Tony Esposito, Tullio De Piscopo, Maria Pia De Vito, Giovanni Tommaso, Mario Schiano, Antonello Salis… Creato nel 2018, il Percussion & Brass Express propone un repertorio dedicato in particolare a Lester Bowie ma comprendente anche musiche di Joseph Jarman, Chico Freeman, Roscoe Mitchell, oltre che di Moye e Leloil: un fuoco incrociato tra gli strumenti, un incalzare ritmico estroverso in onore dell’ex compagno di storiche imprese musicali.
