“Quello che più mi ha attratto in J.L. David è la sua doppiezza d’animo, la sua ambiguità e il suo opportunismo. Dipinge soggetti e scene ispirati ad episodi classici, dove si evidenziano la virtù, l’alta moralità, la lealtà nei confronti della patria, ma poi si schiera dalla parte di Robespierre e sottoscrive la condanna alla ghigliottina di tutti coloro che non aderiscono allo spirito sanguinario del Terrore. Quindi da un lato la virtù e il rigore del senso etico, dall’altro la disumanizzazione di tali principi, fanno di David un artista dalla duplice anima” dichiara l’autrice Camilla Migliori. Il pittore, rappresentante della prima fase del Neoclassicismo, detta pre-rivoluzionaria, dopo la caduta di Robespierre, è accusato per la sua attività politica, svolta come deputato giacobino. La vicenda è ambientata in una stanza del Palazzo di Luxembourg a Parigi, dove l’artista è rinchiuso insieme ad altri due carcerati. Il periodo turbolento della Rivoluzione francese – i cui eventi hanno portato nel mese di aprile del 1794 alla decapitazione di Danton e a quella di Robespierre nel mese di luglio – sta per volgere alla fine. La Rivoluzione, dopo aver spazzato via l’Ancien Régime, è in crisi. In Francia regna l’instabilità politica. Il pittore vive la reclusione in uno stato perenne di angoscia e i due compagni di cella assurgono al ruolo dei fantasmi di Danton e Robespierre. Dopo una notte piena di incubi, assalito dai sensi di colpa per aver votato a favore di innumerevoli condanne alla ghigliottina, riceve la visita della sua ex moglie. Charlotte tenterà di risvegliare in lui una nuova presa di coscienza politica in nome di un’umanità più giusta e meno violenta.Il pittore, dopo l’esperienza carceraria e in omaggio alla moglie e a tutte le donne portatrici di riconciliazione e tolleranza, progetterà e realizzerà la grande composizione “Le Sabine”.
L’opera, un dipinto a olio su tela, è oggi conservato al Museo del Louvre di Parigi.
“Nel grande quadro Le Sabine – che trae ispirazione dal noto soggetto mitologico della guerra tra Romani e Sabini – tutto potrebbe far pensare ad un salvifico rinnovamento interiore di David. Sorge però un dubbio: in un momento così delicato per lui che si trova ancora in carcere rischiando la ghigliottina per le accuse dei suoi avversari, il quadro dove si esalta un modello di virtù e concordia non è forse solo un modo per ingraziarsi l’opinione pubblica e salvarsi la pelle? Sarà così, conoscendo l’opportunismo del pittore?” continua Camilla Migliori. Un’opera di grande pathos capace di raccontare non solo il potere salvifico dell’arte ma la capacità umana di trovare nuova speranza anche nei momenti più bui. Le musiche composte ed eseguite alla chitarra da Lorenzo Sorgi accompagnano il viaggio introspettivo di un uomo che dialoga con le sue paure e che interrogandosi scopre le sue “verità”.
Il cast è composto da: Giulio Farnese (Jacques – Louis David), Nunzia Greco (Madame Pecul), Alessandro Pala Griesche (detenuto che interpreta Robespierre), Giuseppe Pestillo (detenuto nel ruolo di Danton) e Giacomo Segreto (carceriere).
“Tutte le notti l’ombra di Danton mi corre dietro per le strade di Parigi… e la voce di Robespierre mi tormenta nel sonno…. Perché mi perseguitano…? La mia vista diventa sempre più debole… Tutto appare sfocato, confuso… Quella parete scrostata, laggiù in quell’angolo… vedo ombre, profili di visi, sembrano braccia, gambe che si muovono… (sussulta, impaurito) Ma chi c’è in quell’angolo? Che volete? Come avete fatto ad entrare?”
