Quella di Paolo Berti Arnoaldi Veli è una tra le tante azioni di memoria che oggi custodiamo nel nostro Archivio e che come ogni anno, e in più occasioni, vi offriamo attraverso la lettura di un estratto. Oggi vogliamo rimarcare l’importanza di queste tracce e del 25 aprile per il nostro Paese. Il 25 aprile abbiamo riconquistato la libertà, restituendo il Paese alla democrazia e togliendolo dalle mani della dittatura. Continuiamo a ricordare. Per noi, per le passate generazioni e soprattutto, per quelle future.
Finalmente a Bologna in via Solferino. È il 21 aprile 1945, sabato, il giorno della liberazione di Bologna. Ed ecco la descrizione
originale di quella giornata indimenticabile: “Le notizie sulla presa di Bologna sono molto contraddittorie: di sicuro non si sa nulla, ma il movimento verso Nord è immenso. Questa mattina sono passati un’infinità di carri armati. Qualcosa deve essere successo. Si è quasi sicuri che il fronte è irrimediabilmente sfondato. […] Dopo colazione ero nella tenda quasi assopito quando un grido e un gran movimento mi fanno alzare di soprassalto. “A Bologna, si va a Bologna, fare in fretta i bagagli!” […] Come Dio vuole con armi e bagagli, stipati come sardine in scatola (ma che conta, per Bologna!) partiamo. Sono le 4 del pomeriggio e si va su per salite. Il camion sbuffa ma va sempre avanti verso Bologna. […] si sente puzza di cadaveri e infatti morti tedeschi giacciono ai lati della strada assieme a cavalli, scheletri di automezzi e carri armati. Man mano che ci avviciniamo alla città il traffico aumenta […]. La marcia si fa sempre più lenta. È una colonna interminabile di automezzi. Ci dicono che davanti a noi ci sono 7 chilometri di macchine: è l’ultima attesa che dobbiamo sopportare per Bologna. Attesa estenuante. […] Finalmente giungiamo al ponte di S. Ruffillo: dobbiamo passare per il fiume, essendo il ponte saltato. Superiamo quest’ultimo ostacolo, poi, essendosi la colonna diradata, marciamo a tutta velocità verso Bologna. Aumenta sempre più la nostra desolazione vedendo le campagne e i villaggi distrutti completamente. Ma come entriamo nella immediata periferia della città ci solleviamo: tutto è quasi intatto. […] Scarichiamo tutta la nostra roba, poi alcuni rimangono a dormire in caserma, altri se ne vanno a casa dopo tanti mesi di lontananza. Anch’io mi carico del mio zaino e assieme al dottor Wilmo mi avvio verso casa per le strade a me ben note: tutto è deserto data l’ora tarda, sono le 23. Si ode ogni tanto il vociare di qualche alpino. Giungo davanti al portone di Solferino 11. Quale emozione provo rivedendo la mia via, la mia casa! […] A quanto scritto a caldo allora nel mio diario voglio aggiungere alcuni altri ricordi che mi colpirono indelebilmente. A un certo punto sulla strada della Futa passato Loiano nella giornata limpida si stagliò in lontananza contro il celeste del cielo il profilo di S. Luca e dal camion si sollevò urlato da tutti noi il grido “S. Luca, S. Luca!”, quasi si trattasse di un miracolo e, fra i tanti, incontrai gli occhi gioiosi di Enzo Biagi che pure urlava pazzo di felicità. […] Bologna libera […] “Giornata di festa immensa: magnifica giornata in Bologna liberata. Tutti i visi sono sorridenti, esultanti. La città è imbandierata e nelle vie un fitto passeggio di gente. […] sfilano le truppe italiane, i gloriosi alpini della “Legnano”. La folla applaude e nel cuore di ognuno di noi sentiamo una stretta: la commozione ci assale. Rivedere i nostri bravi soldati in una città che da tanto tempo non vedeva altro che le brutte facce dei tedeschi e delle brigate nere!”. […] Fu dalla scuola di via delle Rimesse che assistemmo sbigottiti ad un’esecuzione, all’angolo della strada vicina, di un borghese trascinato da una massa di persone urlanti di cui alcuni armati. Passarono davanti alla scuola tutto ad un tratto e non ci rendemmo conto di quanto stava per accadere. Si fermarono un po’ più avanti e uccisero a colpi di mitra e pistola quell’uomo contro un muretto, abbandonandolo a terra agonizzante sul marciapiede. Ricordo che da parte nostra ci fu una reazione istintiva e rabbiosa. Qualcuno tirò fuori e puntò il mitragliatore Bren ma fortunatamente si fermò. […] Tutti stigmatizzammo l’accaduto: un’esecuzione sommaria, una vendetta probabilmente contro un fascista, come tante se ne verificarono in quei giorni. Scrissi infatti: “I partigiani di città stanno però agendo con troppa leggerezza: molti fascisti colpevoli sono stati giustiziati, ma purtroppo sono stati sacrificati anche degli innocenti”. […] Era esplosa la giustizia sommaria dopo anni di persecuzione poliziesca che specie nel ’44-’45 era divenuta nella città, in piena retrovia del fronte fermo sulla Linea Gotica, intollerabile e spietata. Noi partigiani “G.L.” aggregati alla “Legnano” non fummo coinvolti e non accettavamo queste repressioni incontrollate che lo stesso CLN cittadino condannò e cercò di evitare.
