Pesa molto meno dei vecchi impalcati reticolari e – nonostante questo – ha prestazioni drasticamente superiori in caso di vento. Basti pensare che l’impalcato del ponte di Messina pesa meno di quello dell’Akashi nonostante la luce sia 3300 m contro 1991. Il segreto sta nell’aver suddiviso l’impalcato in tre cassoni indipendenti di modo che i vortici (di Von Karman) che si formerebbero su una lunghezza complessiva di 61 metri si spezzano in 3 vortici che reciprocamente tendono ad annullarsi nell’area di separazione tra cassoni contigui. Sono state condotte prove in diverse gallerie del vento ovunque nel mondo e tutte hanno confermato la bontà del progetto. Talmente buono che, ad esempio, il nostro ponte, a parità di condizioni di vento rispetto all’Akashi, si deforma lateralmente del 50% in meno nonostante la campata più lunga.
