Hanno esaminato l’esterno del contenitore annerito dall’alta temperatura, che si è sviluppata durante il suo turbolento rientro nell’atmosfera, e lo hanno poi trasportato in un hangar in attesa di aprirlo e svelarne il contenuto. A osservare le immagini diffuse in diretta dalla NASA la scena ricordava un film di fantascienza, ma la capsula nel deserto non c’entra con gli alieni: era partita dalla Terra sette anni fa per un viaggio di miliardi di chilometri per raccogliere alcuni frammenti di un asteroide e trasportarli sul nostro pianeta per poterli analizzare. L’insolita consegna ha fatto parte di OSIRIS-REx, un’importante e ambiziosa missione organizzata per studiare da vicino gli asteroidi e comprendere meglio quale ruolo abbiano avuto nello sviluppo della vita sulla Terra, miliardi di anni fa. I frammenti che ci hanno da poco raggiunto sono pezzi di Bennu, un asteroide con una massa stimata intorno ai 70 milioni di tonnellate e un diametro massimo di 565 metri. Erano stati raccolti nel corso di un breve contatto con OSIRIS-REx avvenuto nell’ottobre del 2020, che aveva permesso di prelevare circa 250 grammi di materiale dalla superficie dell’asteroide. La sonda aveva poi lasciato Bennu nel maggio del 2021 per tornare verso la Terra, sganciare la capsula all’interno della quale aveva raccolto i campioni e farla infine arrivare sul nostro pianeta, più precisamente nello Utah.
