Tra i ghiacci sciolti dell’Artico, i ricercatori hanno rinvenuto la carcassa intera, completa di tessuti molli, di un orso delle caverne pietrificato, perfettamente preservato dal gelo. Alcuni ricercatori della Oorth – Eastern Federal University (NEFU) di Yakutsk, in Russia, hanno ritrovato tra il permafrost fuso delle isole di Ljachov (appartenenti alla repubblica autonoma della Sacha-Jacuzia, tra il Mar Glaciale Artico e il Mar della Siberia Orientale) un esemplare di orso speleo (Ursus spelaeus), o orso delle caverne, perfettamente conservato dopo migliaia di anni.
