Uno degli astronauti della missione Apollo 15 sulla Luna, decise di dimostrare la validità della legge di Galileo facendo cadere una piuma e un martello nello stesso momento. Ecco cosa accadde

È il 1971: durante la missione Apollo 15 sulla Luna, l’astronauta David Scott della NASA decise di dimostrare, in assenza di resistenza dell’aria, l’esperimento di Galileo sull’accelerazione gravitazionale (o dei gravi). In sostanza Galileo diceva che nel vuoto due corpi cadono a terra con la sessa accelerazione, indipendentemente dal loro peso. Gli astronauti avevano portato piuma e martello sulla Luna

Mentre James Irwin riprendeva la scena con una telecamera, l’astronauta Scott prese un martelletto geologico di più di un chilo e una piuma di falco (del peso di tre grammi circa). Erano gli ultimi minuti della missione sulla Luna (la quarta) e la quasi totale assenza d’aria sul suolo lunare rappresentava un’occasione unica per la scienza. A un certo punto Scott allinea i due oggetti alla stessa altezza e poi li lascia andare. I due oggetti cadono a terra nello stesso momento.

Galileo aveva ragione: qualsiasi corpo materiale cade a terra con la stessa accelerazione, indipendentemente dalla sua massa. Ed è proprio da qui che si dedusse che ogni corpo, in prossimità della superficie della Terra, subisce un’accelerazione pari a circa 9,81 metri al secondo quadro
