Il 31 gennaio si celebra San Giovanni Bosco

Considerato dalla religione cattolica Patrono della scuola e degli studenti. Com’è nata questa ricorrenza? Giovanni Melchiorre Bosco nacque nel 1815 a Castelnuovo d’Asti (oggi Castelnuovo Don Bosco), in una famiglia contadina. Aveva solo due anni quando il padre morì di polmonite, poco più che trentenne. Furono anni difficili, tra ristrettezze e difficoltà. Giovanni crebbe educato dalla madre alla responsabilità e all’impegno, sempre pronto ad aiutare nel duro lavoro dei campi. All’età di nove anni, come raccontò lui stesso, un sogno lo colpì profondamente.

Studiò in seminario e Il 29 marzo 1841 ricevette l’ordine del diaconato, il 26 maggio iniziò gli esercizi spirituali di preparazione al sacerdozio che ricevette il 5 giugno 1841 nella Cappella dell’Arcivecovado di Torino. Poco tempo dopo iniziò il suo impegno di sostegno ed evangelizzazione dei bambini e dei ragazzi, che in quel periodo erano spesso malnutriti e sfruttati. Nel 1854 don Bosco diede inizio alla Società Salesiana, con la quale assicurò la stabilità delle sue opere e del suo spirito anche per gli anni futuri. Cercando di realizzare i suoi sogni ispiratori si dedicò anche all’attività missionaria e nel 1875  partì la prima spedizione missionaria per l’Argentina, terra della grande emigrazione italiana dell’Ottocento e grazie al suo impegno i primi missionari di Don Bosco s’insediarono in una parrocchia a Benos Aires, ma ben presto la loro azione si allargò spingendosi anche in Patagonia.
Don Bosco morì di malattia e logoramento fisico  a Torino all’alba del 31 gennaio 1881.
Il suo messaggio educativo è sintetizzato attorno a tre parole: ragione, religione, amorevolezza. Alla base del suo sistema preventivo ci fu un profondo amore per i giovani, chiave di tutta la sua opera educativa.
Fu dichiarato santo nel giorno di Pasqua del 1°aprile 1934.
