Le vicende narrate hanno inizio nell’estate 1953. Durante una visita guidata al museo archeologico di Vicolo del Leopardo in Trastevere, viene ritrovato il corpo senza vita del guardiano notturno, disteso a terra accanto alla teca di vetro che contiene il tesoro appartenuto a una giovane principessa etrusca. La giornalista Dora Mattei, che fa parte del gruppo di visitatori, si trova per prima sulla notizia che appare fin da subito avvolta nel mistero per fatti inspiegabili. Dora incontra il commissario Bruno Donati, responsabile delle indagini. Le preziose fotografie, la sua determinazione e il suo acume saranno determinanti per la ricerca della verità. La candidatura è arrivata grazie alla proposta dell’Amico della Domenica Ignazio Marino, volto noto della medicina e della politica italiana. Gli Amici della Domenica infatti sono coloro che compongono la giuria del Premio Strega, un gruppo formato da intellettuali, scrittori, giornalisti, studiosi, artisti e registi che ogni anno seleziona i candidati. “Personalmente non sono un lettore di gialli – scrive Ignazio Marino, – ma quando ho avuto la possibilità di leggere il libro ho subito pensato che il genere ha trovato in Paola Fabiani un’interprete originale, appassionata e attenta sia al contesto storico in cui le vicende si svolgono, sia a problematiche che sono ancora vive e presenti nel nostro secolo”. Già dalle prime pagine il lettore viene catturato dal mondo che l’autrice grossetana crea nei minimi dettagli. Il percorso narrativo non ha cedimenti o cali di tensione fino alla fine. Paola Fabiani presenta una protagonista che, nonostante le difficoltà nel farsi valere come donna single, con tenacia lotta per occupare il posto che la società non ritiene adeguato a lei. “C’è un richiamo chiaro non solo alla tradizione dei grandi autori del genere di fine Ottocento e primo Novecento, ma anche alla finezza del romanzo psicologico dello scorso secolo – sottolinea ancora Marino. – Questo si coniuga con la passione irrinunciabile e sincera per la vocazione archeologica di Roma e del Lazio nel suo complesso. Per lo spessore civile e il valore letterario, penso inoltre che“Le Cronache di Dora Mattei. I leoni di Kari” di Paola Fabiani sia un romanzo importante per gettare una luce sulla società degli anni Cinquanta del secolo sorso”. Paola Fabiani è nata a Manciano (GR) nel 1974. È autrice di favole, racconti e romanzi, dai quali trae sceneggiature cinematografiche che hanno ricevuto riconoscimenti internazionali. Per Edizioni Helicon di Arezzo ha dato alle stampe nel 2019 “Il barattolo delle favole”, nel 2020 “I racconti della Loira” e nel 2021 “Le cronache di Dora Mattei. La rosa rosso crèmisi”. Nel 2022 ha pubblicato con la stessa casa editrice il romanzo storico “Forlèna”, vincitore del Fiorino d’Argento al Premio Firenze.
