Sarteano: un religioso silenzio cala sulle vie del centro storico mentre le bandiere delle cinque contrade sventolano sotto il sole di agosto. È il giorno prima della sfida, quella della Giostra del Saracino, e la tensione inizia a salire alle stelle. In Piazza Bargagli il tufo è stato steso, le tribune sono state erette e si aspetta di rompere, almeno in parte, quel silenzio questa sera grazie alla “provaccia”. Alle ore 18:00 di oggi, mercoledì 14 agosto, si terrà infatti la “provaccia”, una sfida non ufficiale ma di preparazione, durante la quale i giostratori potranno prendere confidenza con il campo e iniziare a calcolare con massima precisione la direzione da fare tenere all’asta per centrare l’anello, di soli sei centimetri di diametro, e ottenere la vittoria. I cinque giostratori entreranno nel campo di prova seguendo l’ordine di partenza stabilito domenica 11 agosto, durante la Tratta dei Bossoli, ordine che seguiranno anche durante la sfida ufficiale. Ecco i nomi dei cinque giostratori, in ordine di ingresso in Piazza Bargagli: per la Contrada di San Lorenzo, guidata dal nuovo capitano Maurizio Pippi, correrà Luca Betti, classe 2000, il più giovane della piazza. Esordiente di grandi speranze, forte di un “gruppo stalla” di tutto rispetto del quale fa parte anche il padre Claudio che ha corso più volte e vinto ex-aequo la famosa Giostra del 1995. Ancora incerta la monta: il giovane giostratore dovrà scegliere tra due cavalle, Luna e Shakira. A entrare in piazza per seconda la Contrada di Sant’Andrea, guidata dal capitano Mattia Salvadori, che conferma Nicholas Faenzi di anni 29. Spetta a lui l’arduo compito di riportare a Castiglioncello il palio dopo 14 anni di digiuno. Ha già corso due giostre esordendo nel 2022 e vincendo nello stesso anno la Provaccia. Monterà sicuramente Quarzus, bellissimo e velocissimo anglo arabo di 15 anni. Non è del tutto esclusa l’opzione di Perre Ascra, stallone anglo arabo di 16 anni con Nadir alla finestra, il mitico cavallo puro sangue arabo di 18 anni vincitore di quattro giostre. Terzo giostratore che proverà a conquistare il Palio è Michele Cappelletti, per la Contrada di San Bartolomeo, guidata dal capitano Massimo Nocchi. Giostratore di 33 anni lo scorso anno ha disputato la sua terza Giostra con una performance di tutto rispetto. Riconfermata con tutta probabilità la cavalla Lezera, anglo araba di 20 anni, più pronta rispetto all’altro cavallo Turan. Il penultimo giostrare a varcare la soglia del campo di tufo, sarà Tony Bartoli, per la Contrada di San Martino, capitanata da Francesco Ciaccioni. La sua storia giostresca lo conferma come l’uomo da battere, forte di sei vittorie in dodici giostre corse e con il record di precisione dell’80,6% di anelli validi. Cavalcherà quasi sicuramente Nanut, esperto e affidabile anglo arabo di 15 anni con il quale ha conseguito tre vittorie. Pronto per la Giostra anche l’altro cavallo a disposizione Spritz, anglo arabo di 7 anni. Ultima contrada sarà quella della Santissima Trinità, con capitano Federico Pizzinelli, il quale si affida al trentenne Giacomo Perugini, secondo giostratore vincente più giovane di sempre (tre giostre vinte tutte per la contrada giallo-viola). Si posiziona al secondo posto anche per precisione della stoccata, avendo infilato il 68,5% degli anelli. Giacomo dovrà scegliere se affidarsi a Vibranio, anglo arabo di 5 anni oppure a Tintoretto del quale si parla molto bene. Con la provaccia si andrà sicuramente a capire se la fortuna sarà dalla parte dei principianti o se l’esperienza giocherà le sue carte vincenti. Ciò che è certo è che nulla è sicuro fino all’ultimo galoppo dell’ultimo cavallo e che ancora, per scoprire la contrada vincente, bisogna aspettare qualche ora. I contradaioli nel mentre potranno consolarsi a vicenda presso le proprie contrade, dove, a seguito della provaccia, questa sera si ritroveranno per le cene propiziatorie. Dopo le cene l’appuntamento è con la Giostra del Saracino per il giorno di Ferragosto alle ore 16:00 nel centro storico di Sarteano. Si dà il via al pomeriggio della sfida con il Corteo Storico della Giostra, il quale sfilerà per le vie del paese con oltre duecento figuranti con i priori e le famiglie nobili di Sarteano, i capitani a cavallo, dame, cavalieri delle contrade, ancelle, musici, armigeri, sbandieratori, tamburini, chiarine, il carroccio trainato dai buoi che mostra il Palio, i giostratori e palafrenieri.A seguire il corteo il saggio di abilità con la bandiera da parte degli sbandieratori di ogni contrada accompagnati dai tamburini. I due sbandieratori e i due tamburini verranno subito a conoscenza del risultato della sfida, il premio gli verrà consegnato infatti subito dopo i numeri, a seguito della consegna di un altro premio, il premio “corteggio”, consegnato alla contrada che più si è distinta per portamento, costumi, e altri fattori, durante il corteo storico. Ancora prima della consegna dei premi, si procederà alla benedizione dei giostratori e dei cavalli. L’inizio effettivo della Giostra è previsto per le ore 18:00. Dopo la lettura del bando e la fatidica frase “e senza porre più mora alcuna si dia cominciamento alla Giostra!”, i giostratori uno dopo l’altro si lanciano finalmente al galoppo, nella speranza di centrare con l’asta l’anello, posto a una curiosa altezza, per la precisione due metri e un centimetro e mezzo da terra (una misura calcolata su un’antica unità di misura, probabilmente il passetto sarteanese o la canna sarteanese). A conclusione della sfida verrà consegnato l’ambito Palio al vincitore, insieme a un anello e a un’asta, simbolo della sfida vinta.
I festeggiamenti dei contradaioli e degli spettatori tutti proseguiranno poi nelle singole contrade sarteanesi.
