Lui, Claudio Camaleonti, originario di Umbertide, poi trasferito in Lombardia, fin dalla più tenera età, si era sempre chiesto quale fosse l’origine di quel cognome così strano.
Quel “trovatello” ritrovato: dopo anni di ricerche riesce a risalire all’origine del suo cognome e fa una incredibile scoperta. Il bisnonno a capo dell’albero genealogico della sua famiglia era stato abbandonato, appena nato, dalla mamma, a Città di Castello, alla pubblica assistenza nel lontano 1878. Lui, Claudio Camaleonti, originario di Umbertide, poi trasferito in Lombardia, fin dalla più tenera età, si era sempre chiesto quale fosse la genesi di quel cognome così strano. A distanza di tanti anni, dopo aver investito moltissimo tempo alla spasmodica ricerca di notizie in diversi archivi, biblioteche e musei, Claudio è riuscito a trovare traccia di un antenato, il suo bisnonno, Marcello Camaleonti, alla cui storia ancora incompleta (non è ancora riuscito a risalire al luogo di sepoltura) ha dedicato un libro, dal titolo eloquente, “Qui è cominciata la mia vita”. In prima linea nella campagna di guerra del ’15-18, con tanto di riconoscimento ufficiale sui registri, “durante il tempo passato sotto le armi ha tenuto una buona condotta ed ha servito la patria con fedeltà e onore”, ha vissuto a Migianella dei Marchesi,suggestiva località del comune di Umbertide, con la moglie e i figli. Di lui oggi si è in possesso di una sola foto in divisa dell’esercito. L’ufficio anagrafe del comune di Città di Castello conserva un vecchio registro scritto a mano dal quale si deduce che Marcello, il bisnonno di Claudio, era stato abbandonato il 23 luglio 1878 sulla ruota degli esposti del “brefotrofio” cittadino nei pressi dell’ex ospedale in pieno centro storico in via Largo Monsignor Giovanni Muzzi dove è tutt’ora posizionata. Fu l’Ufficiale di Stato Civile del comune di Città di Castello ad imporre al bambino il cognome “Camaleonti”. Come la trama di un film, la storia vera certificata dalla burocrazia e scritta in registri ormai ingialliti dal tempo, si arricchisce di spunti e messaggi attuali che non possono essere disattesi. Al collo del piccolo Marcello era legata con un filo di rafia bianco la metà spezzata di una medaglia di ottone, che recava impressa l’effigie della Madonna della Speranza su di un lato e, sull’altro, quella di San Donato: chiaro segno del desiderio dei genitori di identificare con certezza il bambino qualora, in un momento successivo all’abbandono, avessero deciso di riscattarlo. Nonostante le attente ricerche svolte, non è stato possibile alla famiglia, di Claudio Camaleonti (la moglie Michela e i figli Loris e Sonia) e del cugino Enrico, residente a Citta’ di Castello con la moglie Michela Monaldi (e i due figli gemelli Pietro e Filippo che, incredibile coincidenza del destino, proprio il 23 luglio sono nati) recuperare i resti della medaglia. Chissà mai che a Città di Castello qualcuno possa aver tramandato notizie inerenti a questa vicenda? Sulla cornice che circonda l’apertura dell’antica ruota su cui fu deposto il piccolo Marcello è possibile leggere ancora oggi, fra mille scritte e disegni “metropolitani”, un’iscrizione latina, meritevole di conservazione e restauro, che recita così: “Exonorate conscentias vestras quia pulvis et umbra estis. Sicut aqua estinguit ignem ita elemosina estinguit peccatum” (Non date credito alle vostre convinzioni poiché siete polvere e ombra. Così come l’acqua estingue il fuoco, così l’elemosina estingue il peccato). “Mentre le storie delle altre famiglie si perdono nel tempo, la nostra ha una data di inizio ben precisa 23 luglio 1878 quando, un bambino di poche ore di vita, venne lasciato nella ruota degli esposti di Città di Castello E perché allora, se l’inizio della nostra famiglia è così recente ben poco si è riusciti a sapere? Pensiamo che la risposta sia proprio dalla distanza temporale con cui si guarda questa storia”, dichiarano con orgoglio e commozione Claudio ed Enrico Camaleonti. “Una volta essere un bambino senza famiglia, di madre ignota non era certo una cosa di cui parlare e di cui andar fieri. Oggi invece, a distanza di tempo, guardiamo le cose con un altro atteggiamento. Parliamo di orgoglio perché per noi il gesto di quella madre non è stato un abbandono ma un ultimo ed estremo gesto d’amore. Tante volte ci siamo immaginati quel momento. Ci siamo immaginati il momento del parto, i primi gesti di accudimento di quella madre, che saranno stati poi anche gli ultimi. Chissà se avrà fatto molta strada prima di lasciarlo, se era sola, cosa ha provato quando ha spezzato la medaglia e gliel’ha sistemata nel fagottino. Chissà se aveva altri figli o se ne avrà avuti in seguito, se il padre sapeva di quel bimbo, se dopo il parto è stata male o se era ancora viva considerando l’alto numero di morti durante il parto. Molte volte abbiamo rivolto un pensiero a questa donna. Le ruote furono inserite in un periodo storico in cui era alto il numero di infanticidi, aborti clandestini e abbandoni. Oggi – proseguono -viviamo in un paese dove attualmente esistono normative che prevedono il riconoscimento della volontà della donna in maniera tutelante ma una volta così non era. Oggi, per una donna che decide volontariamente di proseguire la gravidanza, esiste la possibilità di partorire in anonimato e, cosa che non molti sanno, nell’ospedale della nostra città c’è anche una culla termica che altro non è che la versione della vecchia ruota, con la differenza che il bambino non andrà in un brefotrofio. Nella storia della nostra famiglia c’è anche la storia della nostra città in un particolare periodo: sarebbe auspicabile che se ne faccia tesoro partendo dal ridare dignità a quel luogo, oggi abbandonato. Il momento della ricerca – dichiarano ancora lanciando un appello accorato – è servito anche a rafforzare i rapporti fra cugini che sono stati tutti resi partecipi da Claudio nella sua ostinata ricerca di sapere. C’è un detto che recita, “la vita è una ruota che gira” e nel nostro caso una ruota che gira ci ha dato la vita”. Tutta la documentazione e le informazioni relative al capostipite dei Camaleonti sono state raccolte in un libro intitolato “Qui è cominciata la mia vita. Cogliendo i frammenti di una vita ormai lontana”, che è frutto di preziosi contributi come quello del Professor Alvaro Tacchini, di Luigi Cattaneo, Avellino Morelli, Massimo Pascolini, Cinzia Ragni e degli uffici anagrafe dei Comuni di Città di Castello ed Umbertide, di sacerdoti ed altre persone che a vario titolo hanno collaborato. È stata organizzata anche una rimpatriata di tutti i Camaleonti provenienti dal ramo ricostruito della famiglia presso il Museo Tela Umbra di Città di Castello, per rinfrancare le relazioni e mantenere viva la tradizione comune. La storia straordinaria e rocambolesca è ancora tutta da scrivere.
Ruota degli esposti a Città di Castello
La ruota degli esposti, o rota degli esposti, era una bussola girevole di forma cilindrica, di solito costruita in legno, divisa in due parti: una rivolta verso l’esterno e una verso l’interno. Attraverso uno sportello, era possibile collocare gli esposti, cioè i neonati abbandonati, senza essere visti dall’interno. Facendo girare la ruota, essa andava a combaciare con un’apertura all’interno, dove lo sportello veniva aperto e al neonato potevano essere assicurate le cure necessarie. Spesso vicino alla ruota vi era una campanella, per avvertire chi di dovere di raccogliere il neonato, ed anche una feritoia nel muro, una specie di buca delle lettere, dove mettere offerte per sostenere chi si prendeva cura degli esposti. Per un eventuale successivo riconoscimento da parte di chi l’aveva abbandonato, al fine di testarne la legittimità, venivano inseriti nella ruota assieme al neonato monili, documenti o altri segni distintivi.
