In Italia la ricorrenza è anche denominata “ultimo dell’anno” e la serata corrispondente “Veglione di San Silvestro”; è tradizione allestire la cosiddetta cena o cenone di Capodanno, un abbondante pasto, in cui il piatto tradizionalmente più caratteristico è lo zampone o cotechino con le lenticchie
La tradizione di indossare un vestito rosso per la notte di Capodanno ha origine antichissima. Infatti, affonda le sue radici addirittura nel 31 a.C, ai tempi dell’imperatore Ottaviano Augusto quando, in occasione del Capodanno Romano sia gli uomini che le donne erano soliti vestire di rosso, simbolo di prosperità. Successivamente, la tradizione si è strettamente legata all’intimo. Nel Medioevo, ad esempio, la zona inguinale veniva coperta con una stoffa rossa per difendersi dalla sfortuna. Ed è proprio l’intimo di questo colore a tenere banco durante le festività, tradizione che ognuno interpreta a suo modo. Per alcuni va indossato al contrario e rimesso nel verso giusto dopo mezzanotte, gesto che potenzierebbe l’accumulo di influssi positivi. Per altri, invece, l’intimo con cui è stato accolto l’anno nuovo andrebbe gettato. Il significato è chiaro: via il vecchio avanti il nuovo, letteralmente. Nel dubbio, per scongiurare l’inizio di un anno sfortunato, meglio rispettare la tradizione.
Gettare le cose vecchie, o almeno alcune, anche solo simbolicamente, è un’altra tradizione del Capodanno italiano. Una scaramanzia, che simboleggia l’abbandono del passato. In tempi antichi, questo rito si metteva in pratica gettando cose vecchie dalla finestra. Si tratta di un’usanza sentita soprattutto al Sud, che però oggi è molto meno praticata di un tempo: non fatelo, può essere pericoloso, a meno che non viviate da soli in una zona isolata. Hanno lo stesso significato botti e fuochi d’artificio, sebbene oggi vietati in molte città italiane: al centro dei riti del Capodanno c’è sempre il desiderio di accogliere il nuovo, focalizzare su di sé le vibrazioni positive e scacciare via le negatività.
