Tra le sostanze più frequentemente riscontrate vi sono antidolorifici, antimicrobici, antidepressivi, contraccettivi e antiparassitari. Inoltre, tracce di alcuni farmaci sono state trovate persino nell’acqua potabile. I residui dei prodotti farmaceutici possono entrare nell’ambiente durante la loro produzione, utilizzo e smaltimento. L’inquinamento causato da alcuni prodotti farmaceutici e da alcuni conservanti, additivi, coloranti è un problema emergente, con prove ben documentate sui rischi per l’ambiente e, in particolare, per la salute umana in relazione alla resistenza antimicrobica. A lanciare l’allarme è ISDE Italia – Medici per l’Ambiente, che con un nuovo Position Paper porta all’attenzione pubblica e politica un tema spesso sottovalutato: l’impatto ambientale e sanitario dei residui di questi prodotti.
“La diffusione di questi contaminanti è ormai un problema globale”, spiega la Dott.ssa Vitalia Murgia, co-autrice del documento. “Ogni giorno farmaci e cosmetici vengono utilizzati da milioni di persone, ma pochi si chiedono cosa succeda ai residui di queste sostanze una volta rilasciati nell’ambiente”.
Negli ultimi anni, le analisi condotte a livello internazionale hanno rilevato la presenza di principi attivi farmaceutici e composti chimici in fiumi, laghi e persino nelle acque potabili. Sostanze progettate per agire sull’organismo umano finiscono così per alterare ecosistemi interi, interferendo con la vita acquatica e accumulandosi nelle catene alimentari “Non possiamo più ignorare il problema”, aggiunge il Dott. Agostino Di Ciaula, presidente del comitato scientifico di ISDE e co-autore dello studio. “Sappiamo che alcuni di questi composti hanno effetti tossici ed di interferenza endocrina, eppure la regolamentazione fatica a stare al passo con le evidenze scientifiche”. La questione non riguarda solo l’ambiente, ma anche la salute pubblica. L’esposizione a lungo termine a queste sostanze potrebbe contribuire all’aumento di malattie croniche, squilibri ormonali e disturbi dello sviluppo. Per questo, ISDE chiede alle istituzioni un intervento immediato, con un monitoraggio più rigoroso delle acque e delle matrici ambientali, la promozione di tecnologie che portino alla progettazione di farmaci e additivi efficaci e meno impattanti sull’ambiente, la sensibilizzazione degli operatori sanitari e dei cittadini alla necessità di limitare il problema. . “Non si tratta solo di proteggere l’ambiente, ma di difendere la salute delle persone”, concludono Murgia e Di Ciaula “Abbiamo bisogno di un cambio di rotta nelle politiche produttive, ambientali e sanitarie che coinvolga l’intero ciclo di vita dei farmaci: dalla produzione alla prescrizione, fino al consumo e allo smaltimento.
