Le loro navi servivano come tombe, spesso riempite di armi, tesori e persino animali sacrificali per accompagnare il defunto nel suo ultimo viaggio.Sebbene la struttura in legno si sia in gran parte decomposta, la sagoma della nave, la chiglia e gli accessori in ferro sono rimasti intatti. Intorno al luogo di sepoltura, i ricercatori hanno trovato tracce di case lunghe e altre strutture antiche, suggerendo che un tempo era un importante insediamento vichingo o un centro cerimoniale. L’identità dell’individuo sepolto nell’imbarcazione rimane sconosciuta, ma le dimensioni del sito suggeriscono che si trattasse di un capo tribù di alto rango.Questo straordinario ritrovamento si aggiunge alle poche sepolture di navi vichinghe mai scoperte, come quelle di Oseberg e Gokstad, e offre una visione senza precedenti dei costumi, dell’artigianato e del dominio marittimo dell’epoca vichinga.
