Adriano Olivetti (Torino l’11 aprile 1901) imprenditore illuminato. Fu un italiano esemplare ma unico. Figlio di un ebreo e di una valdese, Olivetti aveva etica e coraggio, cuore e lungimiranza. Dopo la laurea in ingegneria chimica al Politecnico di Torino, nel 1925 il giovane Olivetti trascorre sei mesi negli Stati Uniti, visitando le fabbriche americane e documentandosi a fondo sull’organizzazione del lavoro messa in pratica oltreoceano.
Al suo ritorno propone al padre delle innovazioni per la fabbrica da lui fondata a Ivrea. Adriano guida con decisione l’Olivetti verso gli obiettivi dell’eccellenza tecnologica, dell’innovazione e dell’apertura verso i mercati internazionali, dedicando particolare cura anche al design industriale, per il quale, nel 1955, vince il prestigioso Compasso d’Oro per meriti conseguiti nel campo dell’estetica industriale, e al miglioramento delle condizioni di vita dei dipendenti. Tra la fine degli anni Quaranta e gli anni Cinquanta la Olivetti introduce nel mercato alcuni prodotti destinati a diventare veri oggetti di culto per la bellezza del design, per la qualità tecnologica e l’eccellenza funzionale: tra questi la macchina per scrivere Lexikon 80 (1948), la macchina per scrivere portatile Lettera 22 (1950), la calcolatrice Divisumma 24 (1956). Nel 1959 la Lettera 22 viene indicata da una giuria di designer a livello internazionale come il primo tra i cento migliori prodotti degli ultimi cento anni. La sua poliedrica personalità porta Adriano a impegnarsi non solo nel campo strettamente industriale e imprenditoriale, ma a occuparsi anche di problemi di urbanistica, di architettura, di cultura, oltre che di riforme sociali e politiche. A Ivrea si costruiscono nuovi edifici industriali, uffici, case per dipendenti progettati da grandi architetti oltre che mense e asili dando origine a un articolato sistema di servizi sociali per i dipendenti Olivetti che saranno però da subito accessibili all’intera comunità eporediese. Adriano Olivetti muore improvvisamente il 27 febbraio 1960 durante un viaggio in treno da Milano a Losanna. La sua scomparsa lascia orfana della sua guida un’azienda presente su tutti i maggiori mercati internazionali, con circa 36.000 dipendenti, di cui oltre la metà all’estero, e un progetto culturale, sociale e politico di grandissima complessità, dove fabbrica e territorio sono indissolubilmente integrati in un disegno comunitario armonico.
