Sette artisti da Cape Town portano la ceramica sudafricana a TazzinArt a Città di Castello Il rapporto tra Città di Castello e Cape Town in SudAfrica è nato durante la prima edizione di TazzinArt nel 2024 grazie a Monica Monaia ceramista italiana che si divide tra le due città.
È infatti grazie a lei se la prima edizione di TazzinArt ha avuto un seguito nel novembre 2024 a Cape Town durante il festival della cucina e cultura italiana. Forti di questo legame, la seconda edizione di TazzinArt apre quest’anno con un vero e proprio omaggio all’arte sudafricana ospitando una compagine di sette ceramisti e creativi provenienti da Cape Town, ognuno portatore di un linguaggio unico che fonde storia, identità e sperimentazione. Dietro a forme, smalti e superfici ci sono infatti storie profonde: di radici culturali, trasformazione personale, connessioni comunitarie e ricerca spirituale. Come quella di Chantell Lungiswa Joe, la sua ricerca è sintetizzabile come ha detto il curatore Lorenzo Fiorucci durante la presentazione della manifestazione con questo titolo “L’identità è una danza di superfici”
Lungiswa Joe è originaria della Provincia del Capo Orientale e residente a Langa la township più antica di Cape Town, teatro durante l’Apartheid di atroci violenze. Lungiswa si muove tra arte, moda e design, ma è nella ceramica che ha trovato un mezzo di ascolto profondo. Lavorando con l’argilla, Joe esplora la propria eredità Khoi e le molteplici culture del Sudafrica le sue ceramiche sono fatte di superfici colorate e silhouette danzanti che evocano movimenti e legami. Oltre al lavoro artistico, è fondatrice dell’Inxwala Slow Market, piattaforma che unisce agricoltura, artigianato e imprenditoria femminile nelle township. Le sue opere sono già state esposte a livello nazionale e collezionate da istituzioni come il Cape Grace Hotel.”L’argilla mi ha insegnato ad ascoltare con tutto il corpo”, racconta Joe, “è diventata un’estensione spirituale della mia identità”. Altro protagonista di questa seconda edizione di TazzinArt è Sikho Mququ. Le radici rurali di Sikho Mququ, nato a Mthatha, affiorano in ogni vaso che plasma. Educatore e scultore, Mququ modella contenitori che parlano di resilienza, femminilità e protezione. Elementi ricorrenti, come le sculture di mucche usate come coperchio, evocano la figura matriarcale africana, custode del focolare. Le sue ceramiche sono omaggi tangibili alla vita comunitaria e alle donne che la rendono possibile. Le sue parole sono indicative del suo pensiero “Ogni contenitore è una casa. Ogni curva, una storia di appartenenza.” Le sue ceramiche raccolgono questa poetica trasformandola in astrazioni e matericità cromatiche dalla forte plasticità. Con la sua linea Zulu Goth, Sandile B. Cele rappresenta una delle voci più originali della ceramica sudafricana. Nato a Umlazi, combina l’estetica Zulu con dettagli gotici in opere che sfidano i confini tra tradizione e contemporaneità. Cele ha fondato il suo SBC Design Studio nel 2016 e da allora ha esposto in contesti nazionali e internazionali con le sue creazioni, che parlano di spiritualità, lotta e rinascita.”La ceramica per me è una ribellione estetica: radicata nella mia cultura, ma senza paura di mutare forma.” Dalla costa occidentale del Sudafrica, Kate van Putten porta una poetica fatta di leggerezza, precisione e narrazione. Lavorando principalmente con porcellana intagliata a mano, crea tazze, ciotole e vasi che sono racconti in forma d’arte. Ogni pezzo è unico, legato a un frammento di storia. Le sue opere sono apprezzate anche in Europa, in particolare a Rotterdam. “Non creo oggetti: creo storie da toccare, da usare e da tramandare.” Con una carriera eclettica che passa dalla musica alla comunicazione aziendale, Jenny Chadwick ha trovato nella ceramica un linguaggio per unire comunità e creazione. Dopo un periodo formativo in Olanda, ha fondato Kommetjie Ceramics, uno studio dove realizza pezzi funzionali e scultorei, e tiene corsi settimanali. La sua attività è anche profondamente legata a Ceramics Southern Africa, associazione che raggruppa centinaia di ceramisti di Cape Town e di cui è stata presidente per la regione del Capo Occidentale dal 2022 al 2025. “Ogni corso, ogni vaso, ogni mostra è un’occasione per connetterci – con noi stessi e con gli altri.” con queste parole l’artista esprime il suo pensiero sull’arte. Tatuatore da vent’anni e ceramista da tre, Busta Boltoon è la voce più sperimentale di questo gruppo di artisti di Cape Town. Con uno stile che unisce l’iconografia del tatuaggio contemporaneo ai linguaggi più profondi della ceramica tradizionale, Boltoon trasforma ogni pezzo in una tela tridimensionale. La sua estetica è audace, ricca di simbolismi, e mette in dialogo corpo e materia. “Il tatuaggio e la ceramica sono rituali: incidere, cuocere, raccontare.” Nato nel Transkei, Peter Jacobs è ceramista, mosaicista e insegnante. Dopo aver studiato ceramica al Cape College e collaborato con lo Spier Arts Trust, ha fatto della formazione un pilastro della sua pratica. Crede che ogni artista debba possedere una “cassetta degli attrezzi”, fatta di tecniche, esperienze e scoperte. Le sue opere su misura sono richieste da gallerie locali e internazionali, ma è nel passaggio di conoscenza che trova il suo senso più profondo. “Insegnare mi ricorda ogni giorno perché ho scelto l’arte: per creare, ma anche per condividere.” TazinArt si fa così cornice di un mosaico culturale, dove la ceramica diventa molto più di un mezzo espressivo: è contenitore di storie, di voci, di radici.
