Un fenomeno che, secondo le più recenti stime, nell’Unione Europea riguarda oltre 36 milioni di persone, mentre in Italia le persone affette da incontinenza sono circa 5 milioni.
«Di incontinenza urinaria si parla ancora poco – spiega la dr.ssa Marilena Gubbiotti, responsabile del Servizio delle Disfunzioni Pelviche Neuro- funzionali del PO Valdarno – ma ci sono tante persone che vivono questo disagio in silenzio perché imbarazzo e vergogna impediscono loro di rivolgersi al proprio medico». L’incontinenza urinaria è dovuta a fattori di rischio diversi: familiarità, età, gravidanze, menopausa e assetto ormonale, obesità. Attualmente dal 5 al 69% delle donne e dal 1% al 39% degli uomini risultano affetti da una delle varie forme di incontinenza urinaria.
«Non tutti i tipi di incontinenza urinaria sono uguali, hanno meccanismi d’azione diversi e ognuna di esse richiede una terapia diversa – spiega la dr.ssa Marilena Gubbiotti -.
