.La tomba dell’iscrizione, già nota nell’800 (e menzionata anche da George Dennis in The Cities and Cemeteries of Etruria del 1848), fu probabilmente scoperta nel corso degli anni Trenta (scavi del proprietario Bonci Casuccini). Era già violata al momento della scoperta e restituì materiali databili dalla metà del VI fino al primo quarto del V secolo a.C.. Nell’ipogeo in particolare furono rinvenuti frammenti di sarcofagi e di urna, di reperti in bronzo, di vasi di bucchero nero e grigio, di ceramica a vernice nera, di ceramica attica a figure rosse, di ceramica etrusca a figure nere e sovra dipinta e di ceramica acroma.Il sepolcro (oggi non visitabile) prende il nome da un’iscrizione posta su una nicchia scavata nella parete sinistra del vano di fondo “ein thun ara enan”.L’iscrizione non contiene termini onomastici riferibili alla famiglia proprietaria come di solito accade. Si ritiene che il significato generale dell’iscrizione – databile al V secolo a.C. – sia quello di una prescrizione negativa a non profanare un luogo particolare della tomba o la tomba intera. L’espressione in particolare potrebbe essere resa come “non fare (o non porre) nulla qui” (Enrico Benelli, Iscrizioni etrusche leggerle e capirle, SACI edizioni, 2007, pag. 122; Museo Archeologico Nazionale Chiusi, Edizioni Lui, 2003, Guida a cura di Mario Iozzo e Francesca Galli, pag. 62; Massimiliano Canuti, Prima introduzione all’epigrafia/ linguistica etrusca: la “Tomba dell’iscrizione” di Poggio Renzo a Chiusi”; Luca Cappuccini, Luoghi interdetti alla sepoltura il caso della tomba dell’iscrizione, in Riscrivere il Passato. Il nome etrusco di Chiusi e altere Storie, 2019, pag. 6 e ss.).La realizzazione dell’iscrizione secondo un’ipotesi ricostruttiva potrebbe essere messa in relazione con un rito di riapertura della tomba e/o di purificazione (in questo senso Luca Cappuccini). Nell’atrio della tomba, lungo la parete che porta all’accesso della camera laterale destra, infatti, è stata rinvenuta una fossa (1,80 x 0,70 cm circa) per la deposizione secondaria all’interno della quale erano state disposte ordinatamene le ossa di nove individui; gli esami osteologici farebbero pensare ad un gruppo di consanguinei. Sopra e sotto i resti giacevano in posizione rovesciata alcuni piattelli. Il dromos era stato interrato con materiali di scarico tra cui anche porzioni di sarcofagi in pietra fetida provenienti dalla tomba (precedente saccheggio?); tra i materiali sono stati rinvenuti anche frammenti di una glaux sovraddipinta a figure rosse del V secolo a.C.
