Una domanda a cui senza dubbio si è posto qualsiasi appassionato della storia romana, che allo stesso tempo è interessato alla storia urbana e all’architettura, è: quale città è stata più impressionante durante il suo apice: Roma o Costantinopoli?L’antica Roma, la culla dell’impero romano, dove è iniziata l’intera storia, o la Nuova Roma, Nova Roma, la città di Costantino, Costantinopoli, precedentemente nota come Bisanzio?320 d.C.: apice di Roma540 d.C.: apice di Costantinopoli
Prendete in considerazione questi 3 fattori:1) Area urbana2) Abitanti3) Monumenti Se parlando di area urbana e abitanti c’è una chiara vittoria di Roma, 20-25 km² di superficie contro 14 km² e più di 1 milione di abitanti contro 600.000 abitanti, il discorso è diverso se parliamo di monumenti. Dai due documenti sottocitati, otteniamo molti dettagli su quanto debbano essere state impressionanti entrambe le città. Secondo queste fonti, Roma aveva otto ponti sul Tevere, 19 acquedotti, 4000 statue, 1797 palazzi privati, o Domus, alcuni palazzi imperiali, in realtà un gigantesco complesso di palazzi imperiali sul colle Palatino, e 46.602 condomini denominati insulae. La città vantava edifici davvero magnifici come l’Amphitheatrum Flavium, innumerevoli templi, il più grande era il Tempio di Venere e Roma, 856 piccole terme, 11 gigantesche terme pubbliche, 28 biblioteche pubbliche, decine di biblioteche private, molti circhi, il più grande dei quali è il Circo Massimo, molti anfiteatri e 24 chiese. Anche nell’anno 500 d.C., Roma doveva essere piuttosto impressionante, il monaco africano Fulgenzio esclamò dopo aver visitato la città in quell’anno: “Quanto deve essere meravigliosa la Gerusalemme celeste, se questa città terrena può sopravvivere così tanto!”.Ma anche Costantinopoli doveva essere estremamente degna di nota. La città vantava cinque palazzi imperiali, quattordici chiese, otto bagni pubblici, 153 terme private, quattro Fori imperiali, due Senati, due Teatri, quattro porti, quattro cisterne, quattro Ninfei, 4388 domus o palazzi privati, un Colosso, un Circo, il gigantesco Ippodromo, e alcuni templi nel vecchio Capitolium dell’ex Bisanzio. Non sappiamo quante insulae c’erano, ma probabilmente meno che a Roma. Tuttavia Costantinopoli vince nettamente su Domus, avendone più del doppio rispetto a Roma.Ma possiamo supporre, che molte Domus a Roma erano fuori Roma, e non nella città stessa. Dal momento che molti numeri non sono confrontabili, per esempio la Notitia Urbis Constantinopolitanae non ci dice quante statue avesse Costantinopoli, non possiamo davvero paragonare le due città in maniera neutrale.Possiamo concordare sul fatto che entrambe le città devono essere state assolutamente impressionanti nei rispettivi apici. Ma Roma vince per quanto riguarda la vastità degli edifici: Roma aveva gli Anfiteatri più grandi, il Colosseo vince chiaramente, i Templi più grandi poiché Costantinopoli aveva per lo più solo i vecchi templi dell’Acropoli di Bisanzio, Roma aveva anche il Colosso più grande, le terme pubbliche più grandi con le terme di Diocleziano e Caracalla che non hanno rivali, gli acquedotti più grandi e numerosi, più grandi. Basiliche e circhi più grandi, con il Circo Massimo molto più grande dell’Ippodromo.Ma dobbiamo anche notare che Costantinopoli vince in alcune altre aree. Costantinopoli aveva l’Hagia Sophia, che certamente era l’edificio ecclesiastico più grande e imponente, facendo impallidire qualsiasi cosa a Roma, e superando la maggior parte degli altri edifici a Roma per volume interno. Costantinopoli vince anche con le sue mura di terra incredibilmente imponenti e massicce, che erano molto più elaborate e fortificate rispetto alle Mura Aureliane. Aveva anche un vantaggio strategico grazie alla sua geografia unica, potendo così resistere molto meglio agli assedi, poiché la città poteva essere rifornita di cibo via mare, anche durante gli assedi terrestri. La città aveva anche porti, cosa che Roma ovviamente non aveva, cisterne giganti, cosa che anche Roma non aveva, e imponenti mura marittime, cosa che ovviamente anche Roma non aveva.Pertanto, direi che questo è un pareggio, perché non possiamo quantificare lo splendore di entrambe le città. Entrambe devono essere state uno spettacolo da vedere diverso da qualsiasi altro, ognuno a modo suo. Roma come l’antica capitale pagana, con le sue radici pagane ancora molto chiaramente visibili fino al 500 d.C., e Costantinopoli la capitale cristiana con la più grande chiesa della cristianità.
