“Il mio è un un appello deciso per la protezione del territorio aretino e la mozione depositata agli uffici di presidenza del Consiglio Comunale lo testimonia: il Comune di Arezzo deve essere dichiarato libero da OGM vecchi e nuovi, incluse le tecniche di evoluzione assistita. L’iniziativa mira a salvaguardare l’agricoltura locale, la salute pubblica e la biodiversità, in un contesto d’incertezza della normativa europea e di crescenti preoccupazioni sugli impatti delle nuove tecniche.
Non possiamo infatti ignorare i rischi che l’introduzione di nuovi OGM, specie quelli non regolamentati, potrebbe comportare e la proposta della Commissione Europea di un regolamento che cancellerebbe obblighi di tracciabilità ed etichettatura è preoccupante e metterebbe a repentaglio le nostre filiere di eccellenza, in particolare il biologico. L’introduzione di colture OGM produrrebbe infatti una contaminazione irreversibile delle filiere consolidate, compromettendo l’agricoltura sana ed esponendo gli agricoltori al rischio di cause legali per violazione della proprietà intellettuale, come già accaduto negli Stati Uniti. Dati allarmanti mostrano un aumento spropositato dei prezzi delle sementi geneticamente modificate e un mercato globale sempre più dominato da esse. Inoltre gli OGM di ultima generazione possono indurre centinaia di mutazioni indesiderate negli organismi viventi e provocare l’insorgenza di tossine e allergeni non previsti, rendendo indispensabile una valutazione approfondita caso per caso. Con un convegno a gennaio ho cercato di sollevare tali problemi, la risposta di associazioni e cittadini interessati è stata gratificante, lo stesso non posso dire per la politica che cerco così di sensibilizzare e stimolare con un dibattito in Consiglio Comunale. Gli obiettivi sono: vietare in tutto il territorio comunale la sperimentazione, coltivazione e allevamento di organismi viventi ottenuti mediante manipolazione genetica e inserire nel capitolato delle mense scolastiche il divieto di somministrazione di prodotti contenenti organismi geneticamente manipolati”.
