La firma del contratto con ESA a Parigi- Il ceo Di Paolo: «Thales Alenia Space Italia è Prime Contractor e ha la responsabilità della missione» Sarà italiana la prima casa per gli astronauti che andranno sulla Luna negli anni ’30 di questo secolo. La nostra Agenzia Spaziale, Asi, ha infatti affidato a Thales Alenia Space la progettazione finale del modulo abitativo presentato a Nasa lo scorso anno, e approvato dall’Agenzia Usa in settembre. La fase di studio durerà due anni e vedrà Thales Alenia Space Italia come prime contractor.
È un’ottima notizia, anche per il progetto americano Artemis di ritorno sulla Luna, che vede Nasa come principale proponente e a cui hanno aderito, al momento ben 53 nazioni, fra i primi l’Italia. Nasa non è in un momento facile, tutt’altro: è prevista dall’amministrazione Trump una sostanziale riduzione del budget, si parla del 40% addirittura, assieme a quello di tutte le Agenzie americane per la ricerca. Per Artemis i fondi sarebbero stati di recente assicurati anche su altri capitoli di spesa, ma un depotenziamento di Nasa così macroscopico certamente complicherà le cose e rischia di far arrivare la Cina per prima sulla Luna, al Polo Sud, nei primi anni ’30. L’Italia invece è in prima fila per questo importante progetto, che porterà di nuovo sulla Luna l’umanità ma questa volta per restarci, costruire abitazioni, laboratori, strade e punti di ripartenza dalla Luna verso la prevista stazione orbitante cislunare, già in costruzione, o direttamente per il ritorno sulla Terra. Le difficoltà per l’uomo sulla Luna La prima grande difficoltà è dovuta all’assenza di atmosfera che permette ai raggi cosmici di arrivare senza problemi al suolo, e per l’uomo possono essere letali oltre una certa quantità. Se non c’è alcuna atmosfera è ovvio che non si può neppure pensare di respirare, quindi le tute degli astronauti devono fungere sia da scudo per i raggi cosmici e particelle energetiche che arrivano dal Sole che da sistemi in cui viene garantita aria e acqua come minimo. In pratica, a differenza di quanto forse si pensa, sono delle vere e proprie astronavi che proteggono gli operatori dello spazio. Come altre funzioni possiamo aggiungere che le tute spaziali devono permettere le comunicazioni radio, l’alimentazione e altro; se consideriamo che gli astronauti devono anche muoversi più agevolmente possibile per spostarsi e lavorare capiamo che non è facile la progettazione di questi involucri, che fanno spesso sembrare goffi gli astronauti. Sulla Luna poi la gravità è a un sesto di quella della Terra: una persona di 60 chili lì ne “pesa” solo 10, con il risultato, visibile nei filmati delle missioni Apollo di più di 50 anni fa pieni di cadute, di dover imparare a camminare sul suolo lunare. La mancanza di atmosfera crea poi un problema grosso con la temperatura, che va dai 150 gradi ai -150, per farsi un’idea, ed è molto netta, nel senso che, idealmente, se fossimo esattamente lì dove termina l’illuminamento solare e allargassimo le braccia una mano, nella parte illuminata, sarebbe a 150 e l’altra ghiaccerebbe a -150. Si capisce che non sono condizioni semplici di cui tenere conto. Da ultimo, e certamente non migliore delle altre condizioni, abbiamo il problema della polvere, finissima, uno strato praticamente uniforme di molti centimetri, che si attacca alle tute e ai mezzi degli astronauti, penetra dappertutto in modo pervasivo, bloccando o addirittura contribuendo alla rottura di strumenti e meccanismi, ad iniziare dalle ruote dei rover, come è successo varie volte. Pensiamo ai problemi indotti dalla polvere attaccata alle tute degli astronauti che rientrano nella struttura abitativa: un vero incubo. Da questa lista di problemi, che non abbiamo esagerato, si capisce che non si tratta solo di costruire una sorta di bivacco lunare, a similitudine di quelli terrestri di alta quota, ma di progettare una struttura molto sofisticata, sicura ed efficiente per il programma lunare di questo secolo. Thales Alenia Space, coi suoi partner in questa impresa, arriverà in un paio di anni alla definizione per la costruzione: per il 2033 è previsto il lancio sulla Luna, sperando certamente che l’attuale impasse sui lanciatori sia superato. Siamo infatti in una situazione critica, sia per i problemi legati alla disgraziata scelta del vettore SLS di Nasa, rivisto e potenziato e che ha già provocato ritardi di anni rispetto alla programmazione, sia per il sostanziale fallimento degli ultimi lanci di prova di Starship di Elon Musk, il più grande e potente razzo mai progettato.
