Nel suo primo documentario destinato al grande schermo, Reinhold Messner affronta uno dei capitoli più controversi della storia dell’alpinismo italiano: la spedizione al K2 del 1954. Attraverso immagini d’archivio, concesse dal Club Alpino Italiano, e una narrazione intensa, Messner ricostruisce gli eventi che portarono alla prima salita della seconda vetta più alta del mondo, mettendo in luce le tensioni e le polemiche che seguirono. Domenica 26 ottobre 2025, alle ore 20.30, presso il Teatro Manzoni a Milano, si terrà la prima nazionale di “K2, la Grande Controversia”. Una serata con l’alpinista e divulgatore organizzata dal Club Alpino Italiano per affrontare uno dei capitoli più discussi della storia dell’alpinismo del nostro Paese: la spedizione al K2 del 1954 e le tensioni che seguirono. Al termine della proiezione ci sarà spazio per un intervento di Messner e un momento di dibattito. Il film uscirà in sala dal 27 ottobre grazie a Mescalito Film in collaborazione con il CAI e con Vivere la Montagna.

La controversia
Il film si concentra in particolare sulla figura di Walter Bonatti, membro più giovane della spedizione, che per anni fu al centro di accuse e controversie. Messner offre una rilettura degli eventi, sottolineando come la solidarietà tra compagni di cordata possa trasformarsi in conflitto e come la verità possa essere offuscata da interessi e rivalità al di fuori della spedizione stessa. “Con questo film ho voluto raccontare la storia della prima salita al K2 del 1954 attraverso le immagini originali e le voci di chi c’era. Non per giudicare, ma per capire: perché solo chi ha vissuto lassù, chi ha sofferto e ha conosciuto la paura e la grandezza della montagna, può davvero raccontare questa storia”, spiega Reinhold Messner.
Si tratta di una riflessione profonda sulla natura umana, sull’onore e sulla ricerca della verità. Un’opera che invita lo spettatore a interrogarsi sul significato dell’eroismo e sulla complessità delle relazioni umane in situazioni estreme.
“Per chi, come me, è nato e cresciuto all’interno del CAI, e si è formato leggendo i libri di Walter Bonatti e nel mito delle sue imprese, il caso K2 è sempre stato una ferita aperta, quasi una questione di famiglia”, afferma il Presidente generale del CAI Antonio Montani. “Ormai sono passati oltre 70 anni da quella vicenda, che si è raccontata in tutti i modi. Per questo quando è iniziato il ragionamento attorno a questo film, abbiamo pensato che se c’era qualcuno in grado di offrire uno sguardo nuovo e originale su questa storia, quello era Reinhold Messner. E così è stato”, conclude Montani.
