Nel 1963 due ragazzi, Angelo e Franco, entrano a far parte di un gruppo musicale ligure che porta il nome de “I Jets” e che si prefigge l’obiettivo di distaccarsi dalle band dell’epoca facendo musica meno commerciale.Una sera incontrano Angela, che canta nelle balere liguri con “I Preistorici”, e rimangono colpiti dal suo forte temperamento e carisma, tanto da soprannominarla “Rita Pavone genovese”.
Dopo qualche anno entrambi i gruppi si sciolgono; nasce così l’idea di formare un nuovo gruppo musicale composto da Angela, Angelo, Franco e Marina (un’amica di Angela, conosciuta in una scuola di canto).Cominciano ad esibirsi in alcuni locali genovesi con il nome di Fama Medium (Fama-acronimo dei loro nomi) e, visti gli apprezzamenti, decidono di dedicarsi totalmente alla musica abbandonando così le mansioni che svolgevano in quel periodo (Franco, perito chimico, lavorava alla ESSO di Genova, Angelo lavorava come operaio e Angela era benzinaia).Nella formazione iniziale, tre componenti su quattro sono di origini genovesi. I membri originari sono infatti: Franco Gatti (Genova, 4 ottobre 1942); Angela Brambati (Genova, 20 ottobre 1947); Marina Occhiena (Genova, 19 marzo 1950); e il sardo Angelo Sotgiu (Trinità d’Agultu, 22 febbraio 1946), nato in provincia di Sassari e trasferitosi con la famiglia nel capoluogo ligure all’età di sedici mesi.Dopo alcuni mesi di prove Fabrizio de André, il primo a credere nel gruppo, gli organizza un’audizione presso una casa discografica di Milano. Purtroppo questo provino non viene superato e De André, estremamente dispiaciuto per l’esito, esclama: “Questi qui non capiscono un belìn”. “Avrete successo lo stesso”, aggiunge il produttore Brambati.Verso la fine del 1967 tornano a Milano per un’altra audizione presso una differente casa discografica il cui direttore artistico era Franco Califano. Entusiasta dei quattro decide di diventare il loro produttore e crea per loro un nuovo look, che comprende un taglio maschile per i capelli di Angela ed un’ossigenata a quelli di Angelo e Marina.Il momento esatto in cui fu coniato il nome del gruppo fu in occasione di un’ennesima cena che Califano voleva offrire alla giovane band: “Per vergogna, una sera gli abbiamo risposto che avevamo già un invito. Non era vero. Ci fermammo alla prima curva e tirammo fuori i panini. Ma Franco uscì subito dopo di noi e ci vide”. “Siete ricchi di spirito e poveri di tasca. Da oggi vi chiamerete così, i Ricchi e Poveri’”.Il debutto del quartetto avviene al Cantagiro con il brano “L’ultimo amore”, cover in lingua italiana di “Everlasting love” degli americani Love Affaire.
Sarà l’inizio di un’escalation di successi.Il loro debutto a Sanremo fu con “La prima cosa bella” nel 1970”; l’anno dopo sarà la volta di “Che sarà”.Nel 1981 Marina lascia il gruppo a causa di forti contrasti con Angela e tenta l’avventura da solista.Marina avrebbe avuto una storia con Marcellino Brocherel, all’epoca compagno di Angela Brambati. Dopo la valanga di critiche e pettegolezzi, la Occhiena non vuole separarsi dal gruppo ma l’agente dei Ricchi e Poveri l’avrebbe convinta ad accettare l’abbandono con una cifra di 20 milioni delle vecchie lire.Così rimasero solo in tre, continuando a portare avanti alto il nome della band. La separazione avvenne proprio al Festival di Sanremo, nell’edizione in cui presentarono l’indimenticabile “Sarà perché ti amo”.Nonostante il quinto posto, la canzone diventa uno dei singoli di maggior successo dell’anno, conquistandosi il titolo di singolo italiano più venduto del 1981 con ben 7 milioni di copie venduteIl 25 gennaio 2020, Danilo Mancuso, manager del gruppo ha riunito Angela Brambati, Franco Gatti, Marina Occhiena e Angelo Sotgiu, dando avvio al progetto speciale ReuniOn per celebrare i 50 anni dall’uscita del singolo “La prima cosa bella”.Nel febbraio 2020 partecipano (nella formazione originale) come super ospiti della 70° edizione del Festival di Sanremo, condotto da Amadeus, ricevendo il premio alla carrieraDopo l’eccezionale parentesi del progetto artistico ReuniOn, Angelo e Angela ripartono con la tournée in Italia e all’estero.
